I'm posting this strictly as a person who might put material on the curb for others to take.
If the person who I am leaving it out for, left a flyer on my door offering to take specific things away, I expect them to take everything I put out if it's on the list, period.
I don't really see people just putting things out on the curb for people to pick through where I live. But if I did, and someone cherry picked it and left a mess, or left behind a lot of things, I would stop putting it on the curb. After all I am putting it there for other people to benefit from, and having to clean up what is left over probably wouldn't make me too happy. At that point it might be easier to call someone who would take it all away for free.
I know certain things are a hassle, and I know some people have issues with space, etc. But think of it from the point of view of the people who put it out for you to take, and who's only benefit is that you are taking it away for them and only saving them a phone call. These people really are your customers and if you treat them poorly, they will stop putting things on the curb for you. There is one specific company that puts out flyers where I live to pick up every two weeks, I will never put anything on the curb for them again, just based on what they did the last time they picked things up. My neighbors will not either, I have spoken with them about it and they feel much the same as I do.
