the only form of help i can offer a fellow horder is the harsh reality of loss in black and white and red

on 9/11/12 i printed out 1 of the price quotes found in the buyers/sellers section but never packed or shipped anything out because i still had more stuff to break down and wanted to make 1 clean complete BIG shipment instead of small lots.

well as usual life and other projects got in the way and everything was stacked and packed so it was not a issue taking up space and it felt like money in the bank so...........

fast forward to now and seeing your post reminded me of the price list i printed out back on 9/11/12 and todays harsh reality

    9/11/12 - 8/11/13 - loss %

    135.00 - 112.00 -17%
    95.00 - 75.00 -21%
    105.00 - 75.00 -28.5%
    61.00 - 40.00 -34.5%
    44.00 - 33.00 -25%
    37.00 - 30.00 -19%
    37.00 - 30.00 -19%
    21.50 - 15.00 -30%
    9.00 - 6.70 -25%
    7.95 - 6.25 -21%

    9/11/12 - •Gold, $1733.10, Up $2.30
    8/10/13 - •Gold, $1314.70, Up $2.30

Nice CPU stack you've got there. I wonder just how many computers you've broken down to get that many, or did you buy some of them already loose?

OTB, thanks for that price sheet comparison, I was wondering about that just the other day so I could pity myself for hoarding them also. Funny thing is I must have looked at those lists too much, I immediately knew most of the CPU's on the list just by the prices alone. Since your gold price for the same dates is down around 24.5%, it shows that CPU prices really do track the gold price pretty closely.

Hoarder/Stacker theory, don't worry about price dips, they are opportunities to buy.

Don't worry PCS, I will get with a few other members, we will work on an intervention, and remove all of that for you. I know, I know...there will be tears, but you will be better in the long, run once all that clutter is gone.

For some reason, I have gotten a lot of Pentium Pro cpus compared to all other ceramic ones. The weight is about 50/50 for pros/other ceramics. Crazy! I don't have that much though haha.

that's awesome its going to be a nice payday if ya ever cash them in and to oldtoothless that posted the loss chart I am not sure were your selling but just selling them on ebay is the same price going strong when gold was $1800 and above so you should start selling there if your taking a loss cause I factor in shipping and the fees and still take no loss except for green fiber with alu that's down about %15 but those you can save for years for a rebound at the scrap services that buy.

You're correct .. but here the thing.. One day.. I might be able to buy a loaf of bread, a jar of mayonaise and a dozen eggs with one Pentium processor..

Its not a loss, its a loss if I sold it now.. but its really a gain.. because I've not lost them on selling now.

    Lovely collection Pcs.

Now..for some fun...Set them up like dominoes..an watch them go! Or build a house of CPU's..oh the fun! Watch your friends, an fellow forum members faint at seeing your recklessness!

If you can't/won't sell them, might as well play with them.

Only thing I can say is....dollar cost averaging. Sell them when you get them...sure get enought to get the volume uptick in pricing...but dont hoard...sell. By the time gold recovers the 25% from its high I would have doubled the money you woukd get from all those if sold today like 2-3 times.

There are too many ways to make money out there....always turn and burn...you can have such a better roi than "waiting on the market".

    Just sayin...

I think collecting things can be a great hobby, but it is usually a poor investment. You will find endless stories of people buying low and the prices keep going lower. Many who tried this in the stock market jumped out of windows on the 20th floor. A better analogy would be all the people who paid hundreds and even thousands for Cabbage Patch Kids. Decades later, they are still going to take a loss if they sold their collection. The same goes with sports collectibles, they lost a lot of their value and never came back. I think you should always strike when the iron is hot. If you can make money, take some off of the table. You may be waiting for the day prices come back and that day may never come.

I have my own "guilty pleasures" and hoard certain things, but I already got my money back 2x over what I paid for the items before I start keeping things.

If I had that many and had the patience to lay them all out, I'd probably be rolling around in them making snow (processor?) angels right about now
