jord- What is your pricing difference of turning in the rotor or drum vs leaving on the car.
I'm not sure if it is good or bad.. but most times the rotor price is darn near in line or exactly in line with the sheet steel price.. so I always leave them on the vehicle. Even if they are paying say .01 cents more a lb.. with the work investment of getting them off- it has never made sense financially to do so.. just curious if you tend to get double or triple sheet price for them where you are?
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Shred is 140 a ton
Auto cast is 250.
Its worth it to me LOL I get on average 2 bucks per rotor/drum. Sometimea more if its real chunky. Its not much work. Just blast the anchor bolts with the torch and rip the rotors off. Then take a sledge to the druma. Usually pop right off. 5 mins to make around 8 bucks.

Yup.. if I were able to make $8 MORE than I am, I'd do them also. So very odd that prices are so darn different within the same continent! See right now our Shread is at $230/ton and cast is at .12/lb (basically $240/ton) so the half a penny difference doesn't make it worth me while.

Thats unreal. Id kill to get 230/ton. Hasnt been that high in the past 2 years up here. Iv got 3 cars and bossman has probably a dozen on the lot right now waiting for prices to go up. Paid for them when the prices where at 190.Jord-

There is a lot of factors going into the price you get at the yard. Export fees, distance to shipping depots/ports, very few yards= less competition= we pay you what we want. I like the fact that here I have 10 yards in 2 square miles, and probably close to 75 in the city. And, they're all fighting each other to get the customers.

We have i think 4 or 5 in my city and 2 in the city 25 mins north. Not that much competition.
If i ever owned i yard id look at one with a rail siding. Or the option to have one built. That way it can be shipped direct. Lots of it. South of us theres a huge scrap yard and i always see rail cars loaded up in there. Im sure most of it came from other yards by trucks. the less the material needs to be handled the better your margins.

Yeah, all of the big yards around here are on rail lines. But, those yards like to deal in quantity. I once went to a yard that was open on Sundays (the only one in the city), and their prices were so low I held onto the scrap til the next day. When you're the only game in town they can dictate what you get. If I were you I'd call up that big yard see what their prices are. Maybe, take a trip once in a while if the numbers add up.

Iv thought about it. But i think for my main sort of scrap (cars) the fuel to get there would offset the profits. May be worth it for non ferrous though

yeah there are the same price here to.I can get $2.00 each for them if say i get them from someone else.But it isnt worth it to me to do it.

I can see fuel prices being a problem If you can only haul one, or two at a time. Around here I've seen these trucks that transport easily 20 cars, and trucks on trailers similar to this one. They smash them first though.

Where I live I am close to a large metropolitan area as well as down south of it there are quite a few yards. I literally have about 12-15 yards that accept vehicles- so prices stay in-line, with that being said- if one drops $20 a ton, THEY ALL FOLLOW SUIT. We also are about 3 hours from Gary, IN which is a huge steel area, I only assume that everything that gets turned in and squished.. goes 3 hours north to Gary!
Same with Core Buyers. In one little town 10 miles south of me there are literally a dozen core buyers, new ones pop up every day.. one guy gets fired, he goes into business with another guy from another core buyer- they get financed by another buyer who leverages their business.. and THAT keeps prices at market value and in-line.
The downside in all of this is the following: Scrapping ANYTHING here is FIERCE.. I mean FIERCE.. and as far as cars go- I don't get cars for $100 or $150 except AS the Exception.. I have to pony up decent chunks of change and work hard, efficiently AND Smart in order to not lose me arse. I have to be at the top of my game- each and every time, and be willing to walk away even if I've already spent the gas to go look at it- an empty trailer is better than an empty wallet!
