Large UPS system

Anyone have any luck besides scrap for a large old UPS system? I got this one I know it will bring some decent scrap value, but want to explore "more than scrap" value. If anyone has a source or suggestion I'm all ears. This thing is about 13 years old. Not sure if the batteries still hold a charge but I guess I can do the old tongue test

They are usable for solar power projects etc.

Otherwise, if the batterys are dead (& most are after 2 yrs) the batterys sell as scrap weight.

All ups backups expire after 2 or 5 yrs depending if consumer or professional grade. I would say that scrapping is the best course of action in my experience. Even if you replaced the batteries, that is a bit of age for the rest of the components.

Looks like that thing's still wired in. Whoever paid $200 has considerably more than scrap value in mind, and probably thinks he got a bargain, and, depending on his plan, he probably did. That unit could power a whole house (deep freeze, AC, and all) for a week, depending on the batteries used with it

I paid the $200. Figuring worse case I can get $12 per battery plus the scrap value of all the steel, wiring, etc. But....hoping for better payday as more than scrap. I also bought some old IBM AS400 equipment they had listed as well. Going to do some homework on selling it as-is, just wondered if anyone here has done the same.

Short update:

Luckily I had a 24' truck with a lift gate I was using on another job when I went to pick these items up. 3 large cabinets on the UPS system. The first contained 18 batteries and other components including a VERY large square D breaker. The second cabinet had all the controls and cutoff switches. The third cabinet had the inverters. I used a pallet jack to move the first and third cabinet and it took all my strength just to start it rolling on a concrete floor. The lift gate was noticeably straining against the weight. I also got about 200' of 3/0 wire. Total scrap value is probably close to $1k, but I am negotiating a deal with a guy to sell him the whole thing for $5k as is. Not bad for a $200 investment and some sweat.

From the same auction I also picked up 3 AS/400 expansion cabinets for $44. The cabinets alone are selling for $750 each on ebay, not to mention the price for the 130 or so hard drives they contained (YES...I said 130 hard drives!!!!). These are all SCSI drives at 9, 16 and 35 GB. Current sold listings on ebay are $27 each for the 9 gig that are tested. I have about 45 of those

the last thing I got was a IBM AS/400 tape cabinet for about $22 I think. It contained 4 tape drives. Two were for cartridge type tapes and the other 2 were for reel-to-reel types. A current sold listing from ebay on 9/5/13 for the cartridge type is about $1,100. don't know what the others will bring.

Will post final numbers once I get things listed and (hopefully) sold
