Wood sides made me a marked woman!

And I wasn't even out scrapping! I had run up town for beer after cleaning house all day and had just turned the corner when I saw the lights behind me. I knew I had paid for the beer lol.

Guy looked at my license and asked if I'm the only one drives this truck. Well yes I am and nobody had borrowed it.

He asked me if I knew a certain lady (no) and if I knew a guy that drives a dark truck with wood sides (he named him and described him) . I said I'd chatted with him a couple times while out scrapping but didn't know his name or where he lived.

He said they were looking for a dark truck that had been involved in a burglary. Well, obviously they weren't after me specifically but were just looking for information (since they knew it was that guy) but dang, scared the crap outta me!

Sorry to hear you went through that. It surely is a love hate relationship with those guys, but mostly love as they are many times putting their lives on the line even with just a routine traffic stop.

I respect them and thank goodness it wasn't one of the few bad ones that went over board just because your vehicle vaguely matched a description.

Strange, our local sheriff pulls me over to throw things on the trailer. I like seeing his lights.

I think it would be naive to believe that when a police officer chats you up.. even in a very friendly tone, that they are not keeping a mental log of things. There is a guy in town that I now know- runs dirty. I used to be friends with him. A police officer pulled up one day when he got his rollback and spent a good 30+ minutes talking with him and all of us. I don't think for a second that she didn't take note of who was with him and what was on the truck. I have a sneaking suspicion that he is being watched, I have seen the police slowly creep by his place, and go around back down the alley as well- noting what he has.

As with any small town and knowing many other scrappers- the grapevine is buzzing that he is up to no good. If other scrappers on the street know it- you dang sure know that the law is aware.

I have no issue with that. I run clean, all my turn-ins are legit, hard earned, paid for or given to me by the property owner, standing there I had no issue having a conversation with the officer- but then again- I have nothing to hide either! He chalked it up to "I've known her for years.. she knew me when I was a baby blah blah blah" I sort of laughed at how unaware he really is!

I like the time a police officer pulled us over and were thinking she is going to give us a ticket because the truck is smoking too bad, we don't have seatbelts on, or load not properly loaded. But no, she wanted an antique glider (all metal one) we picked up the neighborhood over. She lives in another city so we take it over a few days later and shes got like 2 of these already but she is on vacation so we leave it there anyways. We just figure this is $ we will never see again but no a week later she comes by in her police car and gives us $25.

I knew I hadn't done anything but it bothered me a bit when he said ''funny you know him.'' Well no, I don't know him know him I just know of him because its a very small town and you can't not be aware of other scrappers.

You should never, ever, ever talk to the police. Ever. Even if you are not doing anything wrong and have nothing to hide, you should not talk to them. What sledge said in his post is exactly correct. The police do not just go and have "friendly conversations" with people. If they are talking to you, they are either trying to find out if you know something about a crime, or if you yourself are involved with a crime.

So if you know something about a crime that happened, lets say a kidnapping or a homicide, you wouldn't say anything? Way to help your fellow man. Of course if you were the victim it would be a different story I guess.

If you need to report something to the police you can make an anonymous phone call. If I was a victim I would not bother to call them, they are not interested in helping people here.

I watched a video that gave equal time to a law professor from a large US university and a respected police detective....I cant remember where I saw it, darn it, so I'm being vague.

BUT, the gist of the whole thing was, if you are charged with something, clam up. The professors point was that you will have plenty of time to tell your side of the story to the judge. But talking to the police won't have them drop the charges or otherwise get you off the hook. He gave plenty of examples of how well meaning, innocent conversations with the police would just get you in deeper.

The detective basically said, Yep, that's correct. Your best bet is to stay silent.

Now this is a little different situation than what we have here but it certainly is prudent to answer direct questions politely and let them do the talking.

Same here police don't show up quickly unless they hear the word "gun" and then they send 4 within 2 minutes

Idaho, you centerpunched it!! That's the one. That video is worth watching--even for Canadians, where the law is a little different but we still have the right to remain silent.

just got back from my parents..mom was just as mystified and ''omg'' as I was and dad yelled at me and said I said too much. I was like, ''but I didn't do anything wrong.''

He said I shouldn't have even said I knew who the guy was or anything. Well, the officer is the one threw the name out there and obviously whoever was stolen from knew it was that guy how else would the police know that right? And like I said, small town, all the residents/other scrappers know the various scrappers - they are out every week!

So ....what are you all saying here? that *I'm* the one under suspicion ? how did I get lumped in with this other guy? (by the police)
