    driving techniques as you scrap

    I followed some techniques with my last scrapper auto and now I want to ask your views on some for a final decision

    1) When trolling for goods around town , is it better to keep in a low gear so trans shifts less. Doing this of course limits your speed to a safe RPM.

    2) If you hit a spot that needs time to load what is you max time you let it idle .2 min 5 min 20 min. pros to letting it run less starter wear and possibly
    the motor to stay at peek temp for best combustion.
    I have heard some people say motors burn good amt of fuel at start up.

    have any tips

    Iv had to leave my dodge diesel running for 12 hours non stop one night (middle of feb and -30 with no place to plug in. Didnt wanna get stranded) needle barely moved. My brothets explorer however, funny story. Had to move it out of the drive way so i could leave for work, and figured id leave it running to warm up cause he would be gettig up for work 10 mins later. Well 3 hours later i get a text. He had the day off. Almost 1/4 tank gone. All depends on the vehicle. With my truck i just leave it running.

    When i drive around lookin i keep it under 1500rpm. Usually idle through the suburbs though. Goes about 20km/h.
    If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

    my truck will burn more fuel driving it at -10 and below without letting it warm up for about a mile or two. When you hit the road at 4 am to play plow truck doge vision is key and cold defrosters are no help. Can it be done of course, is it worth a dollar to be able to see that 4 ton state truck barreling down on you absolutely. in summer i agree shut off as soon as possible load and start back up. i just replaced the starter in my work truck which starts 10-20 times a day 7 days a week the truck is 10 years old and this is the first starter it has needed. now with a heavy duty starter i am not worried about wearing this one out before the frame rots out total $120 money saved in gas definitely paid for that.
