Landlord refusing to renew lease

So get this. My landlord is refusing to renew the lease of Burly Guys Junk Removal because I have (gasp!) JUNK! Apparently visibility of junk has po'd a neighbor (almost everything is kept in the building. Sometimes an item or two is left out overnight, but it is not like we were making it look like a junkyard.)

While I am frustrated, I am finding there are better deals in nicer buildings out there, and actually it will be nice to have a fresh clean spot in a new space, with my space actually planned out in advance instead of haphazard as it is now. The lease expires 1/15, but she will allow me out of the lease if I leave early.

The advantage of the timing is that if I go with a three year lease on the building I like I get two months free rent in December and January, my slowest time. So, bonus.

Anybody else ever get the boot because of what you do for a living?

No but mom still wont tell her friends what I do for a side business. My dad loves it and I keep sending him home with harddrives and floppys to tear apart for me.

I hate people who stick their friggin noses where they dont belong. By the sounds of it (little to no junk outside) your neighbor is really bored with life. Hes probably gonna make enemys with the new guys too. People like that always do. Frig em. Good luck with the new place.

my landlord gets a real kick out of what I do. I have even sold a few items to him and his friends. he also has a few different buildings and if I get a large load in he lets me tuck it away in one of the extra buildings short term

Strange world--Burly's landlord gives him the shaft, Directrecycle's landlord helps him out!

Good to hear that Burly has some better options coming up in the move. Give them the dirty digit when you pull your last load out of the old place!!! Pr*cks!!

every time my land lord comes up from the city to collect rent he says i have to much stuff in the back parking lot. two cars and a truck besides me use it. i have two ice huts and my 16ft float trailer/ truck. normally the trailer is over flowing with scrap waiting to be processed. he gets pissed because people dump tires and bags of garbage all the time. but since we've moved in the kids stopped spray painting crap all over the place because I'm normally out side till all hours of the night getting stuff done. we've had a few extremely heated conversations but he would rather have some one around so people aren't making a mess or just hanging out. we've almost thrown knuckles a few times. my wife is better at talking to him. i don't know how to take him half the time. serious culture difference

Truth be had, the landlord probably has a better deal lined up around the corner. Especially with the part of letting you out of the lease early, wink wink.

Sounds like you have a win/win situation going on. Better facility, cheaper price. The timing is perfect with the free months and the slow time. The big bonus is being able to start fresh and build it out like you want.

Life deals you lemons.....

Dollar to a donut that someone moves into that space within one month after you vacate it. Keep us informed on that please.

Not had that problem Burly. Like the others said tho..all happens for a reason. An sounds like a much better deal for you.

Not sure what there is to get worked up about here. A contract was in place with an end date. One of the parties did not want to make a new deal.

The landlord gave a reason, and did not have to. Try to just take it as constructive criticism and make sure your next landlord knows what they will be dealing with in there future tenant.

(Yeah, I am a landlord.)

As far as getting the boot for doing what I do - no, but I am making a run to the scrap yard today with a smaller load than I would like just to keep from having a pile of scrap in the yard for the neighbors to look at. Also for one of my other gigs I would love to weld and work with metals for days on end out of my garage, but only do it sporadically and try and time it on rainy days to not PO the neighbors. I could probably use a shop at this point, hope the landlords don't mind some scrap laying around.

burly have you thought about purchasing some land to work on. small plot of land and a small workshop would be a good long term investment. you could someday be the landlord

The neighbors all know If you don't like my scrap look the other way. If i'm to loud (night time only) give me a call. I'll be ****ed if i can't do what I want on MY property.

The biggest issue you have is the zoning...scrap yards or recycling can be in its own category...you REALLY have to look to make sure you are zoning for that. I actually it DOES make sense. Cant do ANYTHING you want with your property as someone above mentioned (not saying you are wring in any way Burly btw)...but having zoning and rules keeps property values protected and similar businesses in the same areas. Just works better all around.

Sounds like you will end up with a better deal anyways...good for you!

Would that I had the money/credit to plunk down for my own piece of property!

my landlord actually likes what I do . I get calls from him a few times a year to clean out apartments of old electronics and so forth . so we have a good relationship . as long as it doesn't look too junked up

If the landlord is willing to let you out of the lease....maybe she will be willing to give you some "moving expense" money to get you out quicker. It is worth a try.
