Ignorance & I'd add laziness to that.

Case in point, awhile back I spotted a shiny-yellow-metal fireplace fascia leaning up against someone's house. No answer the first time I knocked, but the next week the fascia was still there, and the guy was home.

I asked if I could have it, and then he asked what it was worth. I looked at him & said... "well... I'm not going to lie to you. I hefted it, said, minus the glass, it'll probably weigh out at 30 pounds. Now, if that's all steel, then we're talking 2 bucks, maybe two and a quarter. But it this yellow metal is actually brass... well, brass is about 2 bucks a pound."

He said, "Nah, I ain't got time to mess with that. You take it."

It was brass. 25# worth, along with a bit of steel. Fifty bucks in my pocket because he was too lazy.
