Sometimes you have to prune the tree

So I hired a guy a while back when I was hurting. Turned out to be the biggest mistake. Demanding, likes to issue ultimatums, frequently damages my equipment, always late, and just an overall pita. I even had a customer complaint about this guy, and I NEVER get customer complaints!

Thursday last week he mouthed off one time too many. I told him to take his crap and go. He left in a hissy fit. Of course, later that evening he called asking for his job back. I very politely declined.

My point to all this is, I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders. All of a sudden we are back to getting to jobs on time, the other employees who were beginning to emulate his bad habits have fallen back into line. I waited way too long to do this.



Just food for thought guys.

I hear my wife all the time telling me about all the HR hoops they have to jump through in order to get CLEARLY UNDERPERFORMING people canned.

Just be glad you're able to do it on the spot, as it should be.

I would have to politely ask why you waited so long? Hope you fill the position with someone who wants a job and would work hard and be appreciative. Good luck.

A business owner should be able to fire someone on the spot that crosses the line, unfortunately countless unemployment cases have gone in favor of the person that was fired because somehow the story get's twisted around and suddenly they are the victim. I hope he's man enough to move on and not open a case.

I fired a Marine once. My Captain told me "this is the Marine Corps you can't fire someone". I said "well he doesn't work for me any more but he still works for you". "You need to find him some where to show up every day." "If he comes back here I'll have him counting stones in the parking lot." I was in charge of a unit armory with 2000+ firearms and this guy could not be trusted. Some times you do have to get rid of the bad ones.

This guy eventually went from an E4 Corporal down to an E1 Private through reductions in rank. He did have his congressman do an investigation into myself, the Captain and another SSgt in the unit for discrimination. The investigation took up a lot of the investigators time and they found no discrimination. So no matter where you go getting rid of the bad ones can be a pain, Mike.

I did that about 40 years ago. I was a Motor Sergeant E6 in the Army. Guy couldn't follow the simplest orders. I "fired" him and told him to report to the 1st SGT. 1st SGT called me and said I couldn't do that. I told him I just did. Then he asked what he was supposed to do with the guy. Told him I didn't care as long as he didn't come back to the Motor Pool. Everybody told me that was the first time they'd ever heard of someone getting fired in the Army.
