When a boiler is used to heat a building often times it will heat water for domestic use as well but this system was a bit different. The Amana System used a conventional furnace for heat but also had a heat exchanger that cycled a glycol mixture to a tank for hot water use. These tanks have a nice copper coil in them with brass ends...about 2 feet long and has some nice weight to it. I'm going to hold off on scrapping the coil for a while though due to the fittings making it so easy to hook up to some other type of heating project whether it be solar or wood fired. I'm thinking about using a smaller tank though for quicker recovery times and not sealed so that the pressure issue does not come into play.
