every time i go to the scrap yard

dude there has to tell me to stop digging through the pile sooo much good stuff!

one day im just gonna chil out front the yard buying kids bikes wheels for a day, id end up with enough bmx innertubes to last me a lifetime

one thing i dont understand is that all the scrap that arrives is full of paint and clear and good looking, but the huge scrap piles are all rust red. im guessing that they shred it and filter out all the plastic and debris and what not, and that just leaves behind all the steel to become covered in rust from a few really old iron?
rust is oxidized iron, yes? does that mean it is still iron? still recyclable? like if i came in with a ton of rust, would they buy that off me?

The funny thing is YES. Rust is iron oxide...just where oxygen has bonded with the iron atoms. They can do it in a blast furnace by introducing carbon to bond with the oxygen that is freed by the heat applied...I looked it up and basically they just have to limit the amount of oxygen in the furnace and introduce coke for the carbon. This is why rusty metal is fine.

I would imagine it would be a bit more work at the furnace if you just threw in tons of rust since they would have to add so much pig iron or coke...but it still is iron...jusy oxidized.

    Funny but true...

My first cleanup was at my parents farm the farmer who lived there had dumped all his metal in the woods. There was a cab to an old mercury m100 and the front end of a Chevy envoy an old 4cyl car from the 50s or 60s iirc. There was also abou a half ton of old tin cans. Everything was so rusty it would crumble in my hands, I actually considered using a shovel. All the way to the yard I was followed by a cloud of red dust and when I got there they guy didn't look twice. He just pointed to the light iron and told me to leave it there.
So does this mean I can scrap our smallest province?

My yard will let me pull anything I want out for twice the price of shred. Only got one good score - Over 700 lbs of chest sized steel cages filled with telecom and gold fingered boards. To this day I still don't know what they were.
