Let down...after I thought I hit jackpot.

Hello all, I'm a new scrapper who's been educating myself on this site for several months now. Just opened an account to post and look for some advice.

Yesterday, I found a pile of electronic scrap in the woods. Got permission to clean it out from behind the owner's house (who adjoins our property) and it looks like a lot of old telephone/security/alarm/HAM radio stuff. After loading most of the small stuff that I was going to clean the copper and gold plated fingers from, I found a GIANT roll of green/copper wire. And then another, and another, and another!! Each weighs at least 100lbs, one possibly pushing 200 pounds. Didn't have a magnet, but scraped the green with a knife and it had a copper color. Bingo!!!! Was headed to the scrapyard. Big ol' smile on my face, but trying to act like I was a pro. The smile turned to frown when the lady threw a big magnet on it and it stuck. Not copper they say. Jackpot...revoked!!



Can someone please tell me what this is? What should I scrap it as? Should I try to sell instead of scrap? Thank you so much! Your wisdom has helped immensely. I will post a picture if I can figure out how to attach from my computer instead of URL

I'd advertise it as lightning rod ground or something @ .25 ft or so

Welcome to the forum Slim. These things happen when your new to scrapping so don't feel bad, it's happened to all of us. KZ is right, it should sell as scrap steel. The #1 rule of scrapping is to allways have a magnet with you at all times.

Look at the wire is it two strand one copper one steel? Also any and all metal pays money! So don't be too sad...

I keep on my key ring, a speaker one in the back of the van in a hidey hole, a couple HD ones in my portable tool box(Never know when you need a tool!), an another under hidey section under my cup holders.

Magnets...never leave home without them.

Hello all, thanks for the advice. I stopped at the small area to dump everything but bulk steel. Once they let me in that it wasn't copper, I was going to dump it as shred. But the manager called down and said that they wouldn't take it at all, because I had so much of it and they have had people in the past that have stolen it. If I can't sell it, I'll take it to another yard and mix it in with other scrap.
