Scrapping was profitable before gold went through the roof, and it will be profitable after it drops back down. The issue is most of the middle men will be out of business and local laws will dictate that all
escrap has to be recycled properly (as in sent to the mayors cousin who own the only legal recycling facility in town and he doesn't pay for scrap).
The supply of older systems that have gold content and multiple boards is probably drying up fast. Most people use virtual servers anymore (many servers running on one fast machine) so the volume will be down quite a bit there was well. People switched from desktop to laptops a decade ago, and there isn't much in them (and few hold up well to be refurbished either).
Unless people are bringing you metal I don't see recycling steel as being that profitable for the part timer.
Are we running out of any rare earth metals that would make grinding up old LCD panels worth money (for example)?
