Pushing the limit... again depends on the yard. One of my regular yards are pretty strick on things like a lot of wood, but that would be like fence posts or something. As far as a wood top on a desk they would never say anything about. But at the same time I get away with murder since I have been doing business there for 10 plus years. I always sweep out my truck, carry a broom behind the seat. They give me 10-15 dollars more on the ton of shread. And 20 more on cars, so I pack every car I get completly full. They only give one set price and don't buy non ferrous. I don't have a trailor and have to pull them in, but I only live less than two miles frolm the yard. U should see someone in the driver seat stering a car being pulled by me. Metal sticking out of every window etc.
On the other hand another local yard where I sell my short steel cast. Motor blocks all prepared steel and all non ferrous metals will let me get by with murder on tin/shread when I take it to them. Depends on what part of the county I am in. I once took a 25 foot long 8 foot tall steel colvert in that the highway dept gave me. They had run over it with a track hoe and getting ready to burry it. They were putting a new road in. I figured they would dock me cause of about 500 lbs of dirt in it. They unloaded it with their loader/crain and put it straight into the bailer. The operator(a pretty good guy I got to know) told me that they will sell dirt and all to their buyer so it don't matter. Usually anything I have that would not pass they put straight into the bailer or crusher. Maybe its because I send them christmas cards every year??? Who knows.
