Is my neighborhood getting that bad.

I live in a middle class neighborhood and usually have a lot of good finds in the area. Tonight I saw a 40" TV flat screen sitting out in the trash four doors down from my place. I went to the door, knocked and a woman peered out through the blinds. She then disappeared and I heard "it's some big white guy". Then I heard the sound of handgun slide back and then slam forward. A man came to door empty handed. We spoke and he gave me permission to get it.

Wow all that for a tv, you'd have thought you were telling them your there to rob them. Some people are pretty insecure when people come to the door. Yes it does help if you get people knowing one another like what used to be. I think half of this is there is no trust anymore and everyone is worried about themselves and unless there is a payoff they wont lift a finger to help you either.

My neighborhood is "not THAT bad" but if a strange man comes to my door after dark, it's not unusual for me to go to the door packing heat. For me it's not about trust, it's not about insecurity, but it IS thinking of me and mine. We work hard for what we have and I love my family. I will not have it taken away from me easily by anyone. I choose to be prepared and cautious.

Obviously I don't point the gun in people's face. I usually have the revolver and no one ever knows. But that's just me...

Some people are like that. Some people get a gun and think there John Wayne just hoping to be able to pull the trigger. I have a gun but shooting someone is the last thing I want to do. Don't get me wrong, I will and can use it but hope I don't have to.

I realize not everyone lives in a small town like I do. We still have dirt roads and hitching posts for horses at the local bar. Town is only 170 people. Most of everyone knows each other (which is kinda nice for the "outsider" people). News and talk travels fast which is a downfall but is nice and quiet.

If they were 4 doors down in a residential neighborhood, not apartment complex, I would know them and they would have known to let me know when they were throwing something like that out.
I don't know how many times I came home from work and there would be an xbox, vcr, computer, ect on the front porch with a note on it saying who it came from.

My house sets about 1000 ft from the interstate and is one of the first houses that can be seen. Over the last 22 years many people who were broken down and were walking to the next exit ended up on my front porch seeking help. Depending on the situation most have been greeted with a smile, welcomed into my house and allowed to use my phone. A few have been met with a smile and a 12 guage, handed a phone and asked to leave it on the porch when they got through with it. One night a 2am a drunk man was banging on the door screaming wanting to use the GD phone. He got a 12 guage stuck in his face and was told to leave. He then went next door to my neighbors house and got a 357 stuck in his face. I guess what I'm trying to say is you have to be carefull when you go knocking on a strangers door or opening a door for a stranger.

In todays Amerika it is wiser to be safe then sorry. or in some cases judged by 12 rather then carried by 6. No neighborhood is completely safe any more. Protection from the police is only minuets away, when seconds count.

our yard is 30 miles out in the country in a small community. We sort of handle things here old school. in 3 years we have only had 2 thefts and one attempt that we can tell.
out of the 3 one we didn't catch, they tore the back wall out of the storage building and got some copper. one got away with 50 lbs of copper, we tracked him down and let him know old school style he was no longer welcome in Fountain. He moved that night to Panama city 30 miles away.

The third was run off by my son with one shot from the AK. He tracked him down at a little country store about 100 yards down the road. The guy had peed and pooped his pants and I'm pretty sure won't be back. Some how the rhomer got out a few years ago, that since I was in a special unit in the Navy, our place was completely booby trapped.

Sometimes old school is the only way to go. It works well in my America.

I think the country in general is heading this way. The Northern suburbs of Indianapolis is "where the money is" and lately the "bad guys" have decided to follow the money. It has become an epidemic up there of "home invasions" sadly a mother and daughter were both murdered this past week during a "home invasion." In another, about a month ago, the mother and daughter were raped. All of this for some gold or a few TV's?
I feel you do have to defend your property- your family- your "little patch of land" as they say. It appears that is becoming more and more true by the day!

Hearing the slide-rack would have been a bit disconcerting but at least the guy came to the door empty handed. Wouldn't have bothered me if he had it in hand, as long as it wasn't pointed at me. Being that I'm a shooter/collector; I'm sure we would have had something to talk about. Maybe he moved there from a place that was a lot worse?

maybe it was a recording, home alone style, ring the buzzer and hear the sound of a dozen guns being cocked (in surround sound be even better haha ; )

maybe it was someone keeping their guard up, seems one can hardly do that well enough these days. Predators look for an edge on a victim, and if the intended victim lets down their guard the gig is up. It can happen any time or any where, from the nicest neighborhood in the nicest town, to the most remote parcels in the deepest wilderness. Best keep your guard up ( and maybe get to know your neighbors), I can't really talk there though, I don't know all my 4th door down neighbors, but in my neighborhood that's 5 miles away

always better to be safe than sorry. There is way too much crime out there today. I for one, always open carry. I always have money in my truck. A can also remember a few years back when I sold a truckload of alu rims and was followed close to 20 miles by a few punks. I started driving in circles and pretended to be on my phone to get rid of them (before I carried a gun).

Thought it was just me! Today I came home to a remote control car, dehumidifyer, and a box of AC Adapters. No clue where they came from!

Reading these reminded me of an incident about 30 years ago. I worked as a Mail Carrier for the Post Office in Omaha, Nebraska. Christmas Eve, I was delivering packages all over the city. North Omaha is (or was) "the Black part of town". Being in a mail carrier uniform meant nobody messed with you. It was way after dark when I started up there. Pulled up to one house, grabbed the packages, walked up on the porch and knocked on the door. Curtain pulls back and I heard two things - a revolver slide and some yell "Who is it?". I yelled "Mailman, mailman, Christmas package". Guy opens the door and has one hand behind him. I practically throw the package at him and beat feet out of there.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

We must be way behind the times up here. I JUST started locking my truck at night cause kids have started breakin into vehicles around here. Iv never been greated with a gun, nor have I ever even seen anyone with one other than at appropriate times. hell when a store even does get robbed around here the people use knives, hammers and baseball bats.

I can take a two day course, get my firearms license and go into any Canadian Tire store and buy a .22 or 12 gauge. So its still relatively easy to obtain a firearm here in Canada. We do have shootings in Toronto frequently, but thats all you really hear about around here. Its big news if it happens anywhere else. Its pretty crazy to read some of the stories from south of the border.
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...
