Really? You can't say "D.i.c.k.e.n.s."? What if we were to want to have a discussion about the guy that wrote "A Tale Of Two Cities"???

my fingers dry out and split by the nails as well. its seasonal and have lotion prescribed to help it. one solution I use to use was to fill in the cracks/splits with chapstick.

Chap stick works great. Thanks Directcycle. I like the idea of lard and vitamin E which I will try in the future. Thanks Auminer. Another option is utter balm, used on animal tits (can I say that on here I am only trying to educated our urban members), if not (their utters). The advantage of utter balm (Corona is my brand of choice) is that it is great for diaper rash and other skin irritation's. And I cannot wait for PC to develop a dragon program for scrapping. Imagine we could be talking about calluses on our lips in 2024.
I work a lot of different types of jobs and i find it interesting how your hands will adapt to the work if done for a long enough period of time.
For example working in kitchens picking up hot stuff all the time you build a resistance to the heat picking up a 150 degree piece of metal isn't even a worry ( called abestos hands)
Working outside in single digits today for 8 hours bare handed most of the time doesn't phase my fingers as much as it did in October.
but leave either one for too long and the resistance is lost.
odd but intriguing
There ain't nothing wrong with an honest days work. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.- Old Man
at walmart they have a ointment that is great for rashes and n such it comes in a green can and dang it I can't think of the name of it, but if you goto the pharmicist and tell them that you're looking for the ointment in the green square can they will point you right to it, they uses it on horses and such. for skin issues. hope that help dang what is that name.
^^^^Bag balm. I used to use that stuff on my kids butts

I remember.... Tiger balm. in da green can.
I don't wear gloves, but thats because of my Dupuytren's contracture. ( Dupuytren's contracture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).
I can't pull my little fingertip more than an inch away from my palm. Pretty much permanently a 1/2 closed fist & I can only use the first two 1/2 fingers for holding stuff like hammer handles, but I do get a lot of leverage!
For a while my hands were getting hard & swollen from cuts n stuff, then one day I found a Bumblebee inside. So I cup my hands & catch it & move to go outside.
Well the Bee musta got stuck 'cos it stung me a little. Just a little, not enough to damage the Bee or to leave the stinger in there. I forgot about it till a few days later & then I notice I can move my fingers a lot easyer.
Hmmm, Buzzzzzz. OOOhhhhhhhh. Now I get it, I forgot that Bee stings can help arthritis...
A few days ago I noticed that my left hand, from my thumbs middle joint to my first finger middle joint, is a mishmash of 3mm - 7mm long white scars from screwdriver tips............
LOL I sometimes sleep with small water bottles filled with hot water, one in each hand, to ease the cramping after a long night of scrapping.
ohhhh wow, this thread makes me glad im parttime
collecting san joses scrap
Winter is usually the worst , certain work that is just tough on hands but clean hard work is good for building them up strong, But skin is skin . Freon oil , Burnt items from a fire .very sharp items .
I find no need to be super man . YET that does not mean I don't get caught out there . Gloves are great and plenty times you just don't seem to have em when you need them and you just deal.
Sand paper hands well this year there emery cloth last year sand paper .
But I had years of cracks so bad you almost could not touch a thing . But then the pain passes and a way you go.

No jewelry here. Hand have been hit, cut, skin torn off, burnt, frost bit/frozen, calloused ect that the only time I use gloves is outside when it is darn cold out, and to keep hands from sticking to metal and tearing off more skin. Feel like sandpaper but that's ok.
Hot fluids for the rickety hands. Oils like canola, olive and mineral work good for me. If the mitts and treads get real bad I soak them in oily waxy things. Hot bees wax seems like a good therapy I may need in the near future. Pork fat is gota be near the top and beef fat ain't bad either. Hell, butter works good in a pinch. Once you get asbestos and leather hands, there ain't much going back.
Tis but a flesh wound.
I scrap part time and with my full time job I install telephone systems. I try to keep my hands looking decent so I keep my nails short. It makes it easier to clean the grease and dirt out. On most telephone system installs I meet with the owners and the last thing I want is to present a nasty looking hand for a handshake. I'm a firm believer in soap and water, antibiotic ointment and band-aids. I have many times in the past cut my hand and had to wrap a finger in a paper towel and black tape.
We should start a new thread and compare scars.
just kidding.

I don't believe that too many of us are going to have a second career as hand models!
I was in a beauty contest once but nobody won ; )
Neosporin medicated ointment when the skin starts breaking plum through. The tiny tubes cost several dollars but go a long ways and that stuff lasts forever. It only takes a tiny bit on each cut/break and it relieves the dry skin plus it medicates the sore
