Hey Im new and I have some ?'s :)

Hello, I just started the whole scraping thing about 3 weeks ago. I first started cleaning up stuff around the house and I had got a small little pile started. And then last sunday my neghbior gave me a bunch of old stuff laying around. 3 mowers, 2 catilityc converters, old shelving, old fence, file contanier, washer, basketball pole, and I had some brake rotors, a dryer, 2 microwaves, and a bunch of small stuff. So as soon as the snow melts I am going to take it all to the scrap yard I live out in the rual area but the town over from me is kinda run down and the whole area has crap loads of tv's and dryers, fencing, washers, etc. etc. and their is just a bunch of trash layin around. Their is a scrapyard about 5 miles away from the little town I am talking about. I am going to post flyers sayin I will haul off junk metal. My ? is should I do this for free or should I charge to haul off old metal? If I charge what would a fair price be?

Scrappers are a dime a dozen. Offer it for free beings it sounds like it is all outside. If it is inside a residence, charge a small fee and make them sign a waiver releasing you from any damage to property. Maker sure to pull the good stuff off the appliances.

tjlock has it right. Do some research on those catalytic convertors. If your scrap yard doesn't have a very good price, consider selling them on ebay. People pay big money for them. Also, clean up the appliances, and put all the wire in a bucket. Good Luck Scrapping!

Thanks guy's what kinda money couuld I make doing this part time after I do it for a little bit? I have heard that you can make some big money doing it full time but I am just doing it to get some extra money.

If your just starting out, shoot for at least 250 a week. then you'll see you can make more.

If you're in a really rural area just put out the word that you'll clean up old farm dump sites. People love to get this crap off of their property and the money is pretty good, especially if it's managable by one person. Problem is, if people think you're getting something for it they won't want to give it away. I've had people say, "Well, how much is it worth?" ... You just have to act like it's not much money and say that you're doing them a favor. I approach people by saying, "I've got a load of metal I'm waiting to take to the junk yard. If you want, I could take that away for you since I'm already going there later this week. Then people think they're getting a deal or something, and they're more likely to do it. This is just my humble opinion, anyway....

Yeah i have been out of the game for awhile but i am getting back in it.I buy converters and pay very good for them message me when you get them and we can work something out.

If some asked "is it worth anything"

I'd glance at the pile and say " doesn't look like it"
and perhaps add

" maybe if you save up a couple tons and then load it in a big truck and take it somewhere"

I tell them I'll 'recycle it'.

What's a good estimate for a full time scrapper? Just an average since I know it depends on location, season, etc...

Haha thats a good Idea. how often do most farms/ranches have a big pile? And how often do the let you clean it up?
