    I think the first pic is a voltage stabilizer. In case you have a brownout you can dial up the output voltage to where it should be. Esp. handy for computer equipment. #2 looks to be the insides of an amateur amplifier. Just guessing here. Definitely a big rheostat there. Looks to be home made.



    One of my ex-suppliers (electronic) used to have something real similar with a volt meter attached. One day he noticed the meter hovering around 105 on the meter, and our lights looked yellowish. Called Nipsco and complained, come to find out our whole area around the lake was browning out under peak loads. Burned up his air conditioner. Didn't affect all the computer equip. cause it was all run thru the stabilizer.
