Nuggets of info you've found here

I learn something everyday i get on this forum.
What are some of the nuggets and gems you have found on here, big or small?
The other day I read how to prolong my microwave by not opening the door while it is in operation and how to fix it if it does stop working. Might be a smaller nugget of truth, but this kind of knowledge does help everyday life.
A much bigger nugget I have learned from this site is that people/buyers on this forum pay much more for circuit boards than scrap yards do. So glad I found this site before I sold any of my high grade boards to the local scrap yard.
The list of nuggets could go on for miles and days: how to make money on ink cartridges, what kind of light bulbs have gold plating, rare earth magnets, buyers for all types of material even material that looks like dirt or trash to most people, ect...
Thanks to all you contributing members. Please keep sharing the knowledge.

I learned I would go broke if I tried to e-scrap for a living, people dumpster dive for something other than beer cans (I collect beer cans) and the more I read on here the dumber I feel. I cannot think of a time I logged on that I did not learn something. My latest discovery is the solar collector made from aluminum cans. I am building one now for my shop. I was motivated by the cold weather.

A long time ago a "friend" showed me how to sell scrap. We spent a whole day driving alleys and then took our load in and made 5 bucks each. Everything went as shred. This is all I knew of scrapping and I never did it again until a few years ago. I had a decent job but everytime I was about to make ends meet, seems like someone moved the ends. I googled ways to make side money and got a list of 5 ideas, one of them being scrap metal. Curiosity led me here and I learned enough to make a dang good living working for myself. This forum changed my life. Thank you to the admin for creating this site, and to everyone who posts here. Also a special shout out to mechanic688, who has made some of the most helpful posts I've seen here and in ludicrous quantity. The man ought to open a scrap metal school lol.

There's a plethora of hints-tips-tricks on here, but one that really sticks in my mind was from a jackshmuc video on microwaves where he demonstrated using an old hatchet head to split a microwave transformer. I'm forever getting microwaves, and while many of the trannys in the cheap ones are wound with copper-jacketed aluminum, when you do get a real copper one, that tip makes it SOOOOOOOO much easier to extract the goodies.

One of the most recent pieces of info that EVERYONE should have learned by now, there is no gas in crt monitors, and tvs. It is a vacum and when the seal is broken, air goes into the tube. Hopefully this helps clear up some issues some people have

Honestly, I have learned just about everything I know about escrap here. Been hauling junk for 10+years. Started escrap about 6 months ago, joined this forum less than 2 months ago. I have a college degree in escrap, and mech has been the #1 teacher with his info filled threads and posts. Everyone on here has contrubitied to the learning though. Guess u could say everyone else is the TA's of the classroom. But thanx everyone for all the imput about escrap and being so patient with ppl like me. (Now if I could just learn more about ta caps. Still having trouble spoting them, thanks eric for all the help, but I don't think I can get it!!!) :-(

Sorry, Sir, but you are incorrect. Every time I have ever broken open a tv I use a funnel to collect the Videoline into a jar. This is such a precious commodity that buyers of this gas have their own forum on the INTERNET! As you and others continue to not believe, I will keep filling my jars of Videoline, laughing all the way to the bank! Fools, fools you all are.

Here's another nugget. The snipe is actually a real bird.

Well, having worked with some electricians, I was lucky enough to come across one that let me buy his wire stretcher. They are super expensive because they can take 100' of copper wire and stretch it to 200'. The really cool thing is that the wire also doubles in weight!

I have to say the video on splitting the micro trannies with a hatchet has been used and is worth a ton. I think finding a e scrap buyer was a great find. I also looked up the def of leverite.

    Thanks to everyone who contributes
