    scrapping railroad tank car

I bought a piece of property to develop and it has a few railroad tank cars that were turned into stationary storage tanks. I was just curious if anyone knew of parts of the car that are worth more than scrap or are a special type of scrap? Ive heard there is carbide in the brakes of a rail car but not sure if this is true or not. I also heard there are companies that buy parts like the trucks/axles to rebuild and sell back to the railroad.

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Cool

I've seen people buy the tanks for storage of Liquid fertilizer, and cut the ends off and make one hell of a Colvert. I would go this route.

    scrapping railroad tank car

the scrap yard will want to know where you got railroad stuff. I suggest meeting with the owner or manager ahead of time to find out what proof you need to show they came with the property. they need proof incase they gets asked where they got it.
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

    Matt,

I thought the same thing as you did so i have already had the owner of a local scrap yard at the site. The cars were pulled onto the site and then years ago the railroad pulled the tracks up, leaving the cars stranded on the set of tracks they are on.

The cheapest ive seen is one for Culvert use with the ends already cut off for $200 a foot. Most are 30+ feet long. The wheels and axles could sell pretty well too. Let me talk with my train guy and see what he says would sell best
