I found what looks like a canopy for a boat (retractable rod type). I cut off the vinyl and kept the rods. They don't stick to a magnet but they look too shiny to be aluminum. What could it be made out of?

Time for a grinder test. Sparks then stainless, if not then aluminum. Boat and pontoon canopy rods/tubes I have seen are aluminum.

Some stainless will stick to a magnet, some won't; and some will but very lightly. You have to get a feel for it by testing your magnet on different known grades of stainless.

I think it's aluminum after bending and breaking one of the rods into. What do these grade at? sheet? cast? 6160?
