the hdd is on the outside of the xbox.
it also works the other way around you can use laptop hdd's for more storage on your xbox after reconfiguring.
Although some newer games will not allow such taking of microsofts money

In almost every situation the motherboard will have gold plating, theres going to be at least one particularly big heatsink, controllers have silver switch contacts and the sticks can be desoldered and sold in lots on ebay for about a buck each. The big video out connector on the back (and the hdmi) connector are both heavy plated gold, I seperate them and save for ebay auctions. HDMI connectors and the cord are heavy plated connectors almost always since they are designed to be plugged in and disconnected many times.

those come out of telecom boards Brasscatcher had a post about it somewhere. it's where i learned about the ones with silver inside.
