Around where I live we have several abandoned railroads that have the opportunities to be turned into walking/bike trails. I'm trying to see what it would take to get the contract to remove the railroad rails/ties from the old right of ways to prepare them to become trails. Your thread shows you don't have to be a big corporation to land a big job. I look forward to following this job as it goes on, good luck and be safe!
Theres a guy here waay up north that got a similar contract, "king of obsolete" is his name. He made an appearance on Ice Road Truckers too. He runs antique dozers from the 30s and 40s as well as some classic rigs. Hes a small company and he used his dozers to rip up rail, drag it to where he could cut/load it onto his trucks and scrapped it. He has a website which documented the whole process. I forget it now but let google help you out!

If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

Thanks guys for the info, I remember King of Obsolete with the Detroit. Anyway I have sent several e-mails out today to the supposable current owners of the rr right of ways. If I can get anything to develop I will inform you all.I don't want to derail the thread... So carry on Patriot

Ha! Someone needs to take SirScrapalot's place while hes AWOL! LOL

As for the powerplant, I cant wait to see the demo phase of the project. Should be quite the sight. Would this possibly be the largest project EVER to be talked about of SMF?

Caleb, great find. Please keep us informed how it goes. You might check out the process of proof of ownership with your yard. In large quantities, they might want documentation of abandonment from the railroad. Your yard may also have different rules for preparing it for maximum profit. With large quantities of the same product, they might offer you special prices. Negotiating before starting the project may save a lot of work. Derail and carry on. Good luck.

Caleb, you might want to contact the county commissioners, city council, civic organizations, anyone you can think of and trust. You might be the thrust to starting a pathways project and benefit personally.

It's gonna be close but in this much detail, yes. Sheer volume I would have to say Pistone scrapping out the RR trains, one after another. Still love it when their dealing in sheer volumes while I may be stewing over getting another armload on the truck safely,,,,,lol

Hi Patriot and everyone else. I own a Recycling company in Charlotte NC, M&M Recycling. Our niche is insulated copper wire.. I know you have some heavy hitters bidding on your job but we would love the opportunity to give you a price for your copper wire. We buy wire from just about every scrap yard in few hundred mile distance. I know we are small but you will be suprised with our prices! We have great end user contracts for our copper which allows us to pay great for copper..
You may pm me here or reply. it wont let me post a link yetg lol. My name is Chris.

I have been reading this forum for a while and never got around to joining. I have been on here for over an hour tonight reading posts and likeing what I see. Dont know why I havent joined so far. Congrats on the demo.. Good luck with everything and hope to be able to get you some prices soon.

    Thanks.

Welcome to the forum from the Dakota's. I will PM you. While you are waiting, take time to introduce yourself to the forum. Lots of buyers and sellers here to do business with. We welcome your contributions and love pictures. There are several buyers/sellers forums on here for you to advertise. Take advantage of them. Good luck.

Thank you Mechanic. This is great information. He has completed some impressive challenges. They are well beyond my adventure.

Pistone has posted a few times on my threads, but I have a hard time trying to communicate with him. I did not know, he is a demolition man with great resources. Unfortunately, I am only a scrapper taking on a challenge. I would love to pick his brain, if he has time. He has more knowledge than I ever hope to have.

Because of your post, he might be willing to be a part of this thread and offer his expertise. Thank you.

It has been suggested that certain topics from this project be discussed in separate threads. The lessons learned will be extensive for myself. When researching topics on the forum, I have found some of the best ideas or information buried in a thread on a different topic. Therefore a new thread "A Scrappers Dream Torch" will be started for anyone interested in cutting metals with fuel. The intent of the thread will be to allow others to share their expertise on this topic and create a centralized area for information. I have about four hours of research from threads on this forum, information from other forums, discussions with individuals in this field, and internet research coupled with some experience. Others have decades of hands on experience. I would like to find out how accurate my information is. If this is successful, I may try other topics. If you have a special interest in something in this thread, lets create another thread to allow even more people to participate. Let me know what you think.

Updates on this project have been posted on "A Scrappers Dream: Cutting Torch." The last three days have been spent on training in the use of cutting torches. A lot of practical information about cutting with fuels will be posted on the other thread.

The concentration on the project has been focused on the removal of material from the plant. We are still looking at selling equipment to brokers, having brokers bring their own crews in for removal, and the scrapping of large quantities of metal. We are still identifying nonferrous metals and will be color coding them in the coming weeks. A master plan is being created in conjunction with the future needs of the building. This means a coordinated effort between the owner, salvage crews and construction superintendent. More details will be provided in the future when better access to the internet is available. Sorry for misspellings and grammar. New technology and this is a learning curve as well.

I am not sure what you mean by the bus way. Please explain, once again another learning experience.

This part was added after Pnutfarmer answered the question. Yes there are miles and miles of bus way through out the building that were found when a member of the forum visited the site. I did not know what they were called. It all goes.
