    6.4l info

    Hey fellas, anyone ever owned a 6.4l Power stroke? If so, any personal reviews or problems? I'm highly pondering one instead of a 7.3l.

    Theyre a good motor under 100,000 miles I think. If you get one I highly recommend deleting the dpf but don't run it on a hot tune all of the time. They do run like a scalded ape when deleted and tunes!! Being its common rail always be on top of changing fuel filters. Watch some of these videos and look at these forums to maybe help with your decision.

    I've always said I would get a 7.3, but I'm curious about 6.4s now. Thanks for the links Caleb

    I can chime in. Excellent truck, H&S makes a "eco" programmer (its actually several tunes) for the trucks that gives them nearly 20mpg. Delete DPF and EGR cooler. Be mindful that the engine does consume oil (it's normal) and may be several quarts down between changes. Also a big thing to keep an eye on your oil because if an injector leaks it can fill up the crankcase in a few days. Transmission is solid, the truck itself is good minus the shocks...Just don't start messing with turbos and injectors...the engine is PLENTY for a non cdl driver.

    That said they are 4-5K LESS than a same year cummins for a reason. The 07.5 to 10 cummins trucks are probably the best yet. 68rfe transmission, 350hp, the best mileage by a long shot, did I mention best mileage? Cheapest to replace parts on too...ever gone to a ford dealer for something? I felt violated leaving the parts counter. Think of it like this, the 6.4 can be tuned to nearly 500whp sure, but it wont last. The dodge can be tuned to about 430whp and it WILL last. You don't see million mile powerstrokes much...but theres more than a few million mile cummins out there. And durahax? forget that one.

    The 6.4's arent bad but have some problems and one of the main ones is you have to drain the water separator very often.If this isn't done then it messes up the motor very badly and is very very costly to fix.If i where deciding between the 2 i would get a 7.3.Just because they are better motors and last awhile before you need to do anything for them and not to mention much much cheaper too fix.

    Anything pre emissions will most definantly be cheaper to repair and most likely last longer so he has some good points^^^, armygreywolf, not trying to start a brand war, but I have heard of a few 6.7 cummins blowing head gaskets. They all have there ups and downs.

    Oh I know, and most of the time it's not even a gasket its a leaking injector and a bad piston as a result. Costly...but about half get away with simply replacing the injector, piston and gasket... Cost wise...think carefully about ford...that video is a good reminder of how expensive new trucks can get. I think of it like this...For all that...extra comfort and shininess it will cost you coming and going.

    No matter what you get if you get a 7.3 get a 5 speed not an automatic. Unless you have $4g's to buy a ATS tranny with 500k warranty to put in it. The 7.3 eats them up if you do any towing. Dont know about the 6.4 since I have a 7.3 If your looking for an older 7.3 also make sure the injectors are good or have been redone. Thats another $4g's if you have to do all 8. Diesel trucks are not cheap to repair no matter what brand you buy but a gasser will never tow 7 tons of scrap to the yard at highway speeds At least not in one trip.

    You are correct on a few things put a gasser will tow 14k no problem lol.But only a few gassers will like a v10 a chevy 8.1 and the newer trucks.I looked at a new dodge gasser the other day had a 6.4 hemi in it and is rated to tow 16k lbs i was like **** and the diesel is only rated to tow 1500 more thats not alot of difference really.

    Any truck hauling heavy loads should have a manual trans IMO. I like telling the truck what gear to be in, not it telling me. I wanns be in full control goin down the highway. My 99 dodge diesel auto trans was THEE worst. Would always shift whenever it felt it wanted to. Never again. Lol

    The autos are ok as long as you take care of them.Most people get a auto never maintain it pull a crap load with it then when it goes out talk about how big of a piece of **** it is lol.
    For towing a stick is good but a auto is actually rated to tow more weight than a stick.

    Rated to tow and able to tow at highway speeds like I said are 2 different things. I had a v10 excursion and it would tow my 21 bayliner down the highway just fine at highway speeds. Now go up the mountains to a lake up there and you would be lucky to get above 50mph. Now same boat in my 7.3 pickup and it will drag the boat up the hill at 70mph.

    They all slow down on hills.You just have to mash it.A v10 has just as much torque as a diesel.

    On my 2nd 7.3 now. Injector work on old one, but worth it. 5 speed in 94 and 6 speed in 2000. Problems with both trannys, but still great trucks.
    Old business had 2006 6.0. In shop 17 times first year. Heard 6.4 was the same way.
