    got my first crt television

A load of tv will yeild little copper. The effort is better spent. You missed a mother load for a tv not smart unless just learning lol and you will. Seems like copper used to weigh more and pay better than now days. A whole trash can of pipes (house, refridg ) not over 90$ several trips. I figure what does it take for 100$ ¿ Aluminum, copper, wire, rims, brass, stainless ect..... Think real numbers not Pennies a day.

^^^ Not necessarily so ^^^ A lot of people ( especially on this forum ) scrap a lot of T.V.'s and make money doing so. Real money. To each his or her own, of course. Just pointing out, there is money to be made in em.

Free tv, scrapped on lunch hour? Easy money - don't see how that was a waste of time at all. Plus, being the first one, now you know what they're about.

glad your excited to be doing it tvs and monitors can be a pain but will make you some money depending on your local trash system or recycling places near you. the key is saving all the goodies as they can surprise you as the value builds. there are a few people on here that do a lot of them and a few posts on here as well for help with selling.

I like the fact that you took advantage of an opportunity no matter how small, separated out the goods and are smart enough to know your yard has the answers you seek.

Some on here ask a bunch of question then don't even listen to the answers given.

John, just in case you over looked these items I'll piont them out to you sence you are new to srapping. Two things to look for in tv's. First there is a piece of wire that goes accros the back of the tube and is hooked the four cornors of the tube. This wire is #2 copper so always take it off and put it in with your copper. Next pull the tube out and you'll find a thick wire that is wrapped in black electrical tape. Strip the tape off and the wire inside will sometimes be copper and sometimes it will be au, ether way it is worth taking these things of the tv's.

Good job there John. You saw an opportunity to profit, an you did. Hat's off to you. Some may say it's not good to mess with TV's. I disagree, an lots of posts on here do also. Now some folks won't due to regulations in their neck of the woods, which is understandable. If you can't dispose of the rest of the tv properly, you don't want to get into messing with them. Make sure you know the laws an rules for your area. There is money in TVs and Monitors.

There is nothing wrong with taking TVs(if you can do it right!) just as there is nothing wrong with not taking them. There is money to be made. I do tv's myself now an then, and I'm usually happy with what I yank out of them. It takes me all of 5 minutes to break a tv down. You to will get quick with it.

My best piece of advice..Only you can decide what is worth your time. Not me, not KZ, not the rest of the forum. Only you. We can tell you what we think about it, but..if your happy with what your making then keep at it, an to hell with the rest I always say.

Those copper yokes will add up, as will everything else you find them. An remember, not all tv's are created equal. Some contain gold ( looking at you projection screen DPL's), but most don't. Some contain nice boards ( flat screens of all kinds) an some have just crappy old brown boards. Even those brown boards will contain goodies for you. From alum to copper bearing items. It all adds up. TVs an Monitors took me from part time, to a full time business. I don't take as much as I used to, but I'll still take them when folks ask, or drop them off to me.

Good luck, keep at it, an don't let anyone tell you what YOUR time is worth. You will eventually learn what is worth YOUR time an what isn't.

Edit : I shoulda waited to post. KZ an Happy have given you plenty of good advice.

Black steel, you are either new to the scrap game or need more info but tvs is a good and consistent source of copper. Might I suggest digging through the archives on this forum on scrapping tvs. That should get you up to speed.

Televisions and monitors are the first things I ever scrapped. Always made money on them since I always curb shopped them. One thing to remember is to not buy them unless they are a part of a larger deal. When I mean a larger deal I mean like one monitor per 10 towers if you get into computers. Good job and good for you learning the ropes.
The best way to learn is to do. Dont worry about what others say, they are usually the ones tripping over dollars to make a dime. If it is free then you should always make money on it.

30 yokes to = 5.00 in copper? Dude, seriously, what the hell are you smoking? Let's do some simple math.

    Copper 2.50lb

Yoke depending on tv size, anywhere from .5 to a lb of copper, unless it's a really small tv.

So..say half a lb of copper, out of 4 tvs, that's 2lbs of copper = 5.00 Far from 30 yokes needed.

Oh hell lets say a 1/4 lb of copper per tv, still way less then "30 yokes or double to make 5.00".

For a big timer, you need to relearn some math.

Congratulations, you've now joined the list of Skippy, and that other fella.

Nice math. I'm too lazy. My cash out ticket is my measuring stick. I bring loads not pounds lol. I used to scrap the small stuff but the scales have changed. More still pays the same. I been at it since 2006 very heavy.
