    Florida Scrap Laws Bights

Do you know here in Florida I can only bring two car batteries per day at the scrap yard? That's very inconvenient seeing that I had four to get rid. For that case I went to two different yards. Here is the dumbest rule, you can't turn in a cat conv nor copper/aluminum radiator without a receipt. Just a few weeks ago I found a discarded muffler system with the cat converter still attached, they would not take it due Florida dumb laws. I guess I will just hold on to it until I visit New York in the Spring. What dumb laws have your state enacted against scrapping?

One more thing, when it comes to non ferrous metals, it's as if they don't even care to be competitive with the next yard. There is almost a .50 difference in copper and brass prices, a .30 difference in aluminum and wire prices. Because of this I always have to find who is paying top dollar. The only thing that has some consistency is shred.

So far, they've only been picky about air conditioner radiators and compressors around here. No limits on batteries or receipts required for cats, but the cat prices at the yard are not good anyway. They do take your picture and get finger prints every time for everything...

Here in PA, you can't sell certain items unless you have established a commercial/business account with the recycler. These items include beer kegs, copper over a certain quantity and catalytic converters- all of which are popular targets for lowlifes/thieves looking to score quick cash. No restrictions on batteries here, just the photo ID/license number requirement that comes with any type of scrap transaction.

A commercial account requires a verifiable business that would generate such items. As a converter buyer, I'll only buy them from auto repair shops, salvage/wrecking/towing yards, dealerships, recycling yards or fleet businesses. That's it. There's another guy around me who will buy cats "off the street" from anyone (at a lower price, of course), and that's going to come back and bite him one of these days.

Coming to your neighborhood soon: even the part timer will have to have a permit or license of some type. Won't change any thing or slow down thieves but don't forget the new Gov mantra...."never fail to take advantage of a good crises" Eric Holder U.S. attorney general. from the book- rules for radicals.

guess I should like that sense I have one. Much as I hate to have one, I saw the writing on the wall 2 years ago and advised every one here to get one while you still can. my county doesn't require a license but I made them give me one any way, $50

The one thing I have learn though, to make consistent and good money from this business, it takes some business smarts, planning, and savvy. As such, the real Scrappers will always have an edge.

In Ohio you can only sell 1 cat/ day at that yard and must have the title from the vehicle it came off of.

I found another cat today and I'm gonna hold on to them until I get to New York. There, no bunch of questions, just straight cash, the way I like it.

We're starting to see similar things down here on the sandbar. My main yard is still pretty good, the closer yard tho, will only pay you with a check if there is copper involved. Used to be straight cash. Now it's only cash if your load doesn't include copper. Thankfully they use the local banks, so it's never an issue getting it cashed the same day. I think they got in trouble with the whole buying things they should've asked questions about.

My main yard is located up in Elizabeth City an doesn't seem to be effected by the new rules.

    NC is kinda weird.

I don't really mind the check, but if you can prove you are legit, they should let you fly. I guess registering as an official scrapper would ease things.

They do it for everyone, far as the check with copper. Big or small. It's all good. I don't deal with them all that often, an when I do it's not anything for me to get upset over.

It could be worse, which it is in some areas from what I see here on the forums. I'm quite skilled in hoop jumping.
