    Seize the Moment

I've only been doing this for less then 3 years, but if there is one thing I could pass on to folks trying to get the upper hand on the competition, it would be to take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves. Having a sense of urgency when customers call/text (even after dinner or later) has secured some nice loads and repeat customers.

Looking at Craigslist early Friday morning I stumbled on a post for scrap Jeep parts a couple of mile away. These (Free Clist) are hit or miss with usually a miss and when I didn't hear back in a few hours I wrote it off. Well Saturday I'm eating lunch and the phone rings with Jeep on on the other end. He asked if I was interested and I said I could be there in 10 minutes if that worked for him...Lunch can wait.

Jeep parts have less then 60k miles on them and are showing Green numbers on Ebay so not really scrap...fine by me.

He then says, "Do you like copper?". I just say "Anything metal, anything that plugs in...except old tv's". Well he had several Line Conditioners for high end electronics but two of them work so not much scrap there either...oh well.

So I'm about to thank him and he looks at the bench where the Jeep parts where and say's I forgot the wrenches there, he doesn't need them anymore. From Harbor Freight but no complaints here.

I was grateful for the nice load and he was happy to get the stuff out of the way because he was moving. I gave him a card and he said he wished he had called me first because the last two guys kept him waiting for 4 hours.

    Seize the Moment!

Awesome example KZ. Listen up an learn new folks. The man speaks gospel.

When my people call, I go. Only thing that will stop me is, if I'm out of town or the weather sucks really bad. I.e, Hurricanes, icy roads, unsafe conditions.

Good score. There's a nice market for used Jeep parts.

That axle/ radius arms should definitely be worth some money. I'd open up and check the diff for any broken teeth before selling though

That's the truth! I called about a couple of computer towers last night and left work early to get them. I remember thinking I should have waited and went later while enroute. When I got there, I not only got the towers, but 2 and 1/2 hours of gathering worth of Aluminum, steel and copper from "mom n' law" hoarder's home! I have to go back this week to pick up more stuff. I didn't have room for all the ladders and bicycles.

I thought I would check Craigslist one last time this afternoon before firing up the grill and this Ford popped up. 1996 Contour...new tires and battery, 95k on the clock. It overheated so he thought it was the head gaskets but I haven't checked it out yet. I was the first to call and he said the phone hadn't stopped ringing in the 20 min it took me to get there. Too nice to start busting up so will evaluate in the next day or two.

SSA...Cooler looking thing is a ActionPacker that I keep chains and straps in. Have about a dozen of them, some that are close to 20 years old and swear by their durability. I will neither confirm or deny that any of them had refreshments in them after-hours when running the const. biz. Hoop is in the neighbors yard and is standing up right, but I think you are also seeing the cable support for telephone pole and some angle iron I have propped up against it.

There's a chance the problem may just be a water pump...they have plastic impellers and fail 75-100k so I'm going to pull it and see if it's full of plastic shrapnel.

Don't get to the thrift stores much as they seem pretty picked thru when ever I look, but today I went with the wife and found this little gem for a Buck.

Right now somewhere, a Magic fan boy is having to go change his pants after seeing that.

Pretty cool item. If you plan to sell it, you should get something good for it. Magic is hugely popular with the nerds of the world.

If you want to see instant nerd rage, just goto a magic forum, an show it, an tell them your going to scrap it. Ha ha!

I'm not responsible for you being stalked by nerds if you do tho!

If a guy hadn't bought a 64 drawer library card catalog from me a few months back (he had over 10,000 cards), I wouldn't have known anything about the whole Magic Game and how crazy people are about it.

Yep. It's been what..10, 15 years it's been out now, an still has a loyal following. Just like Pokemon.

Edit: Just did some research, been around since 93, so..21 years an still going strong. According to wiki that is.

Next big thing will be online, an is Hearthstone by Blizzard, makers of World of Warcraft, largest MMO out there. Everything that tries to kill it, fails. lol. WoW killer has become a curse for any game that gets labeled it. (looking at you Star wars online, an others).

If you find WoW trading cards you should try an sell those to, good value in some of the cards. Loot cards in particular go for crazy amounts if it's not been redeemed yet. Anywhere from 5.00 to 500.00 for a loot card. It's nuts.

Just another item to keep an eye out at thrift stores, yard sales an the like.

Sirscrapalot - Has a bit of inner nerd to, an proud of it.

one thing I learned quick was to go get what your making a deal for as quick as you can, while you wait there at least 1 person every 5 min. trying to get the same thing you are.

"Free Craigslist" Gods worked in my favor this weekend. Suburb I live in is decent size but I live in the middle and can get to most places in about 10 minutes. I keep a window on the computer with a search ready when I'm at home and refresh when I walk by and managed to beat out the competition to about a half dozen posting's. One was for two large Deep Cycle batteries that sat on the curb for 4 hours...must have been Happy Hour at the local watering hole.
