    The Yard Check Bounced

Turned in some metal last week and got paid via check. Went to the check cashing place to kill two birds with one stone, cash check and pay a bill. Check mailbox today for yesterday's (Saturdays) mail and got a letter from the check cashing place demanding value of the check plus $30 return fee. My plan is to march over to the yard first thing tomorrow and demand they make good on this check and cover all fees. I'm hoping this goes well, where do you guys/gals stand? Ever been down this road before?

Well the yard should be good for this. If they dont want to cover the fee ask them for 20 lbs copper scrap!

I'm thinking they are going to handle it. I'm a regular there and they know my face. Heck, they don't even ask for my id anymore.

Well I would go to the scrap yard talk to the manager only, be as low key as you can. He should give you the cash for the check plus the charges, tell him you will bring back the check after you bring back the cash to the check cashing store. The Worst thing for a scrap yard is for the world to go around there money is no good. After you get it all straighten out find you self a new yard, they issued the check knowing that it was no good, believe me they knew, Good luck! How much was the check for?

I went through this once - kind of. I showed up at a yard to find a Closed sign in the door. Talked to the manager. A check had bounced earlier that day. Now, he needed to wait till he got paid for his last shipment to be able to accept any more. Within a month, the yard closed permanently. That's why the first advice to guys who want to start a scrap yard is - have deep pockets. Nothing will kill a scrap yard faster - even a small-time guy - than a bounced check. My advice is get the money for the stuff you sold plus fees and in cash - that is if you are legally responsible to the check-cashing place. If not - let them go after the yard themselves. Regardless, your next move should be finding a new yard. You'll need it. That one isn't managing cash flow.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

You would think the check cashing store would go after the yard, since they wrote the check. I'll never understand those places.

An yea..bad form for the yard totally. I know I'd be going elsewhere with my business. It's one reason I don't use the other yard close to me, I just don't trust them to follow through on the payment, an they are very shady..an rather idiotic. They will tell people there is a toz of gold in a computer, an argue with you over it when you correct them. Yards like that just boggle my mind.

If they don't make it good pluss fees file charges. It is illegal to write bad checks but you have to give them a chance to make it right.

It was a tiny $104, if I have to eat the $30 fee, no problem, but I do expect them to cover their portion.

I will gladly sell them scrap computers for $75 each and let them make a nice profit on the toz of gold

Hey Everyone, I'm happy to report the yard took care of everything in flying colors. I called the check cashing place just to confirm and it was all good. Thanks for all the input everyone.

Good advice on how to handle the situation when receiving a bad check. What course of action do we have when material is shipped to an ewaste buyer and nothing happens? No response, no email, no contact, unanswered phone calls, etc. A post office receipt that it was delivered is all that I have. Suggestions?

I don't have to worry about bad checks-I have one of the scrap yard's bins at my place!

    They don't pay-bye bye $5,000.00 bin!

I would be in contact with their county's prosecutor. They pursue that type of things. Tell them you would like to press charges.
