    Trouble for scrappers in Detroit

I've noticed a disturbing trend around here. A couple of weeks ago I was in Flint, a suburb of Detroit. There were several big billboards, and the headline was SCRAPPERS followed by some thing like "If we catch you you'll go to jail!"

    Scrappers? Don't they mean THIEVES?

In addition, one of the TV stations is running a series on scrap THIEVES. It's title? Scrappers!

I'm afraid to see what is coming...

Definition of scrapper: scrapper. a person who removes or does away with scraps.

I think they need to find better terminology for their advertising campaign. That's quite unfortunate, and I imagine that hurt's the "legit" scrappers.

An old term "thats what sells newspapers". Well today it gives "news" people a way to get people to watch them and they can claim they are "looking out for you".

The other side of that is the politicians can use this "reporting" to distract the citizens from what an abysmal disaster that Detroit has become. What Detroit needs is more government control that should really help. lol

Sorry for those who live and work in Detroit. Mike.

If the Gov in the Detroit area gave jobs to the scrapper's (thieves) to recyle all the abandoned auto plants in the area, the billboards would come down.

    Trouble for scrappers in Detroit

in my time at Kettering university, I had to chase off several of these "scrappers". one was trying to take our event grille for scrap.

on the flip side I always gave the guy down the street scrap when I was there, because he mowed our lawn for us, helped me fix vehicles, walked his poodle on a route he tied around his waist through his belt loops, and drank steel reserve like it was the most delicious beverage ever invented.

he loved me when I showed up with a case of it for him.

now, if I would have done what I should have done to the guy that broke into several cars over the years in the parking lot... I did catch him twice, and twice I showed physical mercy. not verbal mercy.

Central IL - Today went to a chain restaurant. The guy I rode with pulled into parking space and passenger tire dropped in a large hole. We got out and discovered a Thief had stolen manhole cover.Manager of fast food restaurant bought his lunch, and explained this wasn't the first time cover was stolen. Sorry Burly didn't mean to high jack your thread.

The politicians that have created this situation that is Detroit refer to themselves as "Progressive" so watch what they do not what they say. I've been in and around Detroit and the "Rust Belt" since the early 1970's. Cleveland has suffered greatly similar to Detroit. Also Gary, In. may not be a common city for most to think about but its been but its been in the clutches of the progressives for more decades than I have been alive. Mike.

Gary...ha..Small area, huge freaking crime rate. Was considered one of the worse areas of the country a few years back. When I went thru..not much had changed. I know truckers who won't stay out side their truck depots there. Go figure.

Someone should do what you all did a couple years back when that one guy was writing the article on metal thieves, an was calling them scrappers. Folks on this forum sent him an email, an asked him to use the correct term. If I recall he even replied that he didn't know an changed his wording from then on.

Mech, use your super powers an find us that thread!

Gary, Detroit, there's places all over the country similar. Hi West Memphis! Not been to Detroit, been to Gary an West Memphis..an both have earned their wonderful reputation. I felt safer in the heroin infested neighborhoods in sections of Baltimore. It's not political. Crooks come in all parties an types, same with mismanagement, an incompetence. I mean wasn't just a few years back, Detroit's mayor was busted spending money like it was water going on trips with some chick that wasn't his wife, an using city funds for it? An ended up in jail for not just that, but taking bribes. An they call Chicago corrupt. Pfft.

Ahh..here it is. From the wikipage on him..."On March 11, 2013, Kilpatrick was convicted on 24 additional federal felony counts, including mail fraud, wire fraud, and racketeering. The conviction stemmed from a 38-charge felony indictment, in what a federal prosecutor called a "pattern of extortion, bribery and fraud" by some of Detroit's most prominent officials.[6] On October 10, 2013, Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison.[7]" Kwame Kilpatrick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Extortion, bribery, and fraud..all that's missing is beat downs, an you would think he was a politician from Chicago back in the day. Not picking on Chicago, but it does have the rep an history of being very corrupt.

Ahh..Politics...gotta love it. Supposed to server the people, yet the only who gets served is the politicians bank accounts, at the expense of the people their supposed to serve.

I need a shower now..I feel dirty after this. lol

Sirscrapalot - There is no distinctly American criminal class - except Congress. - Mark Twain, yes I've used it before, but it fits. (sub congress for, politician.)

I saw the billboard in Flint. Pissed me off also. I don’t consider myself a "scrapper" but still, wrong terminology.
