something scary as hell happened to me today

so i was on my way back from one of my local scrap yards i saw some stuff at the end of a driveway decided to stop and pick it up. i put the truck in park (so i thought) got out and walked around to the passenger side of the truck only to look back over my shoulder to see and hear my truck shift into reverse and start rolling backwards on its own. i started back peddeling flicked the door handle, opend it jumped in the truck over the milk crates on the passenger seat and into the drivers seat to slam the breaks, by which point the truck was moving at a fair speed and had rolled backwards a few hundred yards. thank **** it was on a country road and i was the only one on the road no one got hurt and no damage was done (i got a bruise on my elbow and my knee but all things considered lucky as hell) this every happend to anyone elese? i checked the shifter 5 times to make sure everytime i shift into park it doesnt go all the way and catches reverse hopefully i can just adjust my shifter cable and sort it out

I'm afraid of this all the time. Happened to me once. At least I was on the driver's side and was able to jump right in. It's a scary experience! Glad you worked it out safely.

^^Ditto what Jilly said. I only did that once but caught it before I was all the way out of the truck.

I had that happen with a brand new 3/4 ton (less than 500 miles). I was on the driver's side as I'd just stepped out. It was in a driveway on a busy street. Got it stopped just as it started into the street.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

The same thing happened to me just last week. Only my car sat there while I got out, and only started moving a minute or so later, so it totally took me by surprise. Looked up and I thought someone was stealing it for a split second then ran after my "ghost car" and luckily got in and parked it before it went up over the curb!

when i woke up thismorning i had to check to make sure it was still sitting where i left it lol. going to have to attempt to adjust the shifter cable before i can get back to work. truck wont start with it in reverse. its a 1998 chevy c/k 1500. bought it for $350 with a munched tranny (came with 2 trannies one was still under warrenty with all the paperwork from the wrecker. so i got another trabns for it from the wrecker put an exhaust and a few other parts on it, HUGE knock in the motor. so we pulled the motor and when i dropped the oil pan off it she was ran dry some of the crank bearings were completely gone and some were left smashed to hell. found a blazer with a crate motor that was put in in 2003 with 60 000km on it $550 for that truck. swapped the motor sold the blazer trans and scraped the rest that brand new crate in my truck cost me maybe $100, im maybe $1100 in the truck all in , it isnt much it breaks down on me allot but i dont see how i would ever replace it without spending 3-4 times as much money so i continue to patch her

i dont feel as dumb knowing im not the only one who has had to chase my truck down the street lol...... atleast no one elese saw it..... i think lol though it did feel kind of badass after i saved it..... still dont think anybody needs shinanigans like these. checking my haynes manual, has instructions for adjusting the shifter cable have to pull the bottom kick pannel off the dash anyway if it is as simple as loose bolts i think that may be a great place to start on it

coming home from NH on a Sunday in my 84 K5, I went through a toll and pulled over on the side right after to make sure the hood was fully latched. It had a habit of only being half latched(like if you pull the hood handle but before you move the lever) Anyway, I get out and open up the hood and as I slammed it down it clicked into reverse on the side of the highway!! luckily my girlfriend was inside and threw it up in park as I came running after it. That was scary, and I wasn't even the one in it!
