    Smile Huge Dumpster Find

Well today i went for a walk about 10 minutes from my place i came across a dumpster sitting on the side of the busy road in front
of a house, so i thought i would go and check it out as i always do when i come across a dumpster, i often look through dumpsters
and take any scrap metal i find.

Well when i looked inside the dumpster i could not believe my eyes there where old copper pipes dumped everywhere there where heaps
of them, i could not believe that anyone would dispose of that amount, usually i only find a couple of small pieces or lengths of copper pipes
inside dumpsters, taps, brass, fittings, and what not.

And there where even some U shaped traps as well, the traps are made of thin light weight copper and there are some brass elbows as well.

I have not weighed all the stuff yet to figure how much it is all worth, which i will be doing once i sort it out and cut it up properly.

I have a question is it worth cutting off all the soldered pieces? If i leave them on that's a 50 cents per kilo drop in price.

Or should i leave them on? Will the extra weight make it still work out to roughly $5.00 a kilo?

What do you guys do when taking in old copper pipes to the scrap yard? Do you cut off the soldered pieces or leave them on?

    Anyhow here are the pictures:

Nice score! I would definitely cut the longer pieces. you will get a better price and it won't take long to do. The shorter pieces and ones with tons of elbows might take longer and not be worth the time. But everyone's time is worth a different amount. I hope you asked before you went digging too. I always ask for permission before I go digging.
    Congrats!

sweet yummy copper finds make my wallet swell with joy here most yards for clean #2 is 36in long and for winding bits as long as it fits in the box as for ends I usually save brass and stuff but the rest I just put in a bin as dirty

I don't know the laws in Australia but we call this stealing unless you asked the homeowner before taking it.

Well the homeowner is being either charged by the day, week, month or buy weight, or both! if it is weight is involved this would help out the homeowner. Also is it the homeowners or the roll offs company once its placed in the bin? But with that amount cut, clean and scrap...

looks like the metal was mixed with trash which is usually fair game especially if its on a city street.........Even though I say this its always best to ask!!

    Nice Score!!
I would pay attention to which contractors are on the job. Busy contractors leave a trail of scrap a mile long, usually pays to talk to them or at least frequent their dumpsters

The yards I use would pay #2 copper price for that type of copper so I would leave the solder on. Just cut the steel and brass off. The copper was mixed with other trash and around here it would be llegal to take, just don't leave a mess.

I so wish there was a place to sell stuff like that here. There's SOOO much of it.

Maybe I'll open my own yard, and start freighting it out!
