The ones here say the will take broken monitors- if it's bagged up and in a box marked 'broken monitor'......
and there may be some unattended drop off locations - check for your state.

I just put the tubes in my trash can. They take them no problem.
There's nothing more fun and more effective than hitting something repeatedly with a sledgehammer

PA just passed an 'E-Waste ' law.. and unbeknown to me- TX passed one back in 2007!

But a quick review show them all to be shams in some way shape or form.

Unless there is a big bin at best Buy for them to take back all their garbage, the laws will never work as intended- and in all likelihood, will have the opposite effect.

A lot - if not most- of the Ewaste is shipped overseas and processed in backalleys by people with burn pits and hammers.

I just picked up like 25 CRT's and about freaked out when I got home and realized that I had nowhere to get rid of these things, and then I quickly went to the local landfill website to check out if they had any fees or restrictions for e-waste and I must say I got a chubby when I found out that they do it for no charge for all e-waste!! Just saved myself a planned on $25 dump trip... I am in Kent County, MI so I am not sure where you are from but you might want check out the county's website

Decided to test to see if they'd take the TV without the plastic shell.. Waited with my beer and cigs for the trash guys.. they took it without giving any thought, even without the shell.

Yeah the garbage from scrapping can be daunting. My garbage picks up anything, and I mean anything.

Check this out. We as a city have a contract as a whole for garbage and recycling. Every property is charged a flat rate of I believe $250 or less per year. The days will vary depending on what neighborhood you live in, but this is what I receive living on my street.

On Thursdays I get yard waste pickup. I can put the equivilant of three upright fridges in yard waste out for pickup.

    Wednesday is recycle day

Wednesday AND Saturday is garbage day. I can put out three cans each day. I can also basically put out whatever else I want. When I moved here I put out a refridgerator. (I wasn't scrapping at the time). There is no additional charge for appliances, yard waste, anything at all and all of those pickup days are great! Discounting the household garbage, I can basically get rid of a truckload of garbage a week.

This is the first place I have ever lived with the double pick-up days.

It's double pick up in houston too. Bulk trash early on in the week, and then light trash later in the week. and the only thing i havent seen them take, are tree stumps that 2 men alone can't lift

Also there's a ring around the glass, that's wrapped in tape.. It's aluminum, in case I'm not the only one keeping aluminum scrap.
That "ring around the case" may NOT always be AL. More often than not, it is copper. It is the easiest way to get your Bright/Bare wire from a TV.
I am currently meeting with SC DEHEC to become certified for E-Waste Recycling. It is a VERY stringent Law here in SC, but I agree with some of you, it could backfire and have the opposite effect.
Right now, the cheapest rate I have found nationally to process the CRT Glass is 10cents per pound plus freight. There goes your profits. That is why MOST E-Waste Recyclers have to charge "Up-front fees" to handle CRTs and TVs .
If you live in a state that has these laws in place, either get "legal" or quit messing with them, because the "little profit" that you get out of the metals etc. is NOT worth the fines if you get caught.
    Good Luck !

I finally had an encounter as you stated with them being copper. The first 20 or 25 I unwrapped were AL, so I just assumed all were the same.

    TV Glass

Here is an unorthodox use for TV glass. I am into primitive archeology and am learning flintknapping. Many people use tv glass as a learning matrix. It is thick yet easily knapped. I used to seek out old tv's just for the glass before I knew about scrapping. Just an idea to share.

Unfortunately, that doesn't actually help any of us. Interesting, though. Once CRT monitors are taken apart, in many states, they then become hazardous waste, and the tubes MUST be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. After all, they are chalked full of lead and phosphorus.

I would think you could melt it down and seperate the lead from the glass (then scrap the lead), but not sure how to go about it. Would it cause harmful fumes? How hot would it have to be? would it be cost effective?

I have a buddy who owns an auto shop. I rented a dumpster for the property and we get to both use it. So I can strip what I want and not have to worry about getting fined or caught using someone else's dumpster. It's worth the $56 a month.
