Is it possible to store the stuff in your dump trailer or truck until you can go to the scrap yard? It looks better then piles of junk everywhere.
I live in the middle of a large suburb and keep all of my steel in my backyard. So far, I haven't had any problems with neighbors, HOA or city yet. As long as I'm quiet at night and keep it relatively unnoticeable or put any massive piles of junk or a car back there, no one cares. It does help having a solid wood fence to hide stuff behind.

I was going to suggest a privacy fence, I imagine from hearing the description that the "stuff" can be seen thru his fence. So far, I haven't had any problems with neighbors, HOA or city yet. wadarbr549...Well of course your local government is going to tell you your property is worth more...they want more of your money. Folks around here call their bluff and win all the time.

i did not know it was possible to debate the price they value your land at on the tax assessment...i just always thought you had to pay on what they valued it at and that was the bottom line....i know there is a huge difference in what the government values my land at and what a bank would loan me on my place...if you have any info on how to get the amount lowered i would love to check that out and do a bit of research on it.

Just like you said in your post YOU HAVE NO DESIRE TO BE LEGITIMATE I can understand your point of view, the fact that you see nothing wrong with storing Flammables and oils in drums in a shed with out the proper ventilation and signage on your home site shows every one that reads your post your values. The original thread was about a scraper who was was warned twice and now has started to pay fines for running a business from his home.i was voicing my opinion and only that. I am by no means a spokesman for this forum, this forum is about learning from other more experienced in different areas. That what makes this forum so helpful and interesting.

Well said Wadarbr549
I 100% agree with everything you said.
OP take his advice.

i agree i love this forum...i am 100 percent LEGITIMATE..i meant if i had to rent property , have employees , and hide all my junk to be LEGITIMATE i had no desire to achieve your idea of being that way....all my barrels have breather caps on them and there just fine..my sheds all stay locked....my place is a private residence also so it does not need any PROPER SIGNAGE....i have always enjoyed all of your previous posts and i would like to add i believe you are a very good contributing member to this forum...i just do not like it when folks tell me how to manage my own property...
after writing my first reply to your post i have since thought a bit more about it and i believe the opening posters situation is more than likely different than mine....i live in a small town in the country and i am not in a real populated area..so what is alright for me may not applie to others who live in a city...i have had neighbors in the past who tried to cause me trouble. it has always worked out my way in the end...no matter who they call or try to report things to they get the same answer, there are no zone laws or community regulations about anything in my area...
The city was snooping around my place and was quizzing my neighbour (business) about what I do.
When the inspector found out no-one drops off at my place (I pick it all up myself) and I don't pay anyone for scrap-he lost interest.
Plus the yard I rent is zoned heavy industrial and there are no houses in the area.
I also don't make noise before 9am or after 6 pm so I'm sure that helps as well.

There are 2 sides to every story. I'm very conflicted by this situation when it pops up. The best solution has been suggested. Out of sight out of mind. Problem is,you are now probably a target. Code enforcement draws a lot of self important types.
I'm a firm believer in castle laws but, then again, when and where do your property rights stop and your neighbors begin.
Most people think this is a Democracy when in fact it is a constitutional republic. The difference is, : A true democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep deciding whats for dinner or mob rule, in a true republic the sheep has a gun.

I've never had any complaints and I have alot of older neighbors who have called about other things (loud music, dirtbikes, etc) but never when I am using a sledge to break things apart. Probably because its mainly in the middle of the day when people are already awake or not home. Also, I only store my shred outside, in the way back corner of my yard so it is not right next to anyones property, and put a tarp over it until the leaves come back in the spring. Kinda outta sight, outta mind the way I think about it. But I do try to keep the pile low and packed tight to take up less room
Olddude beat me to it - out of sight, out of mind.
You have a right to know the identity of your accusers, it takes filling out a form with the proper department. You'll just have to ask around to find out who to file with. When you do get the names, don't harass them, but pay extra notice to their comings and goings to work around them and not flaunt your activities in their face.
If you insist on continuing your hobby in a residential zone, keep the noise down. Work in your garage, transport and store under tarps in the back. Just be considerate.
Seriously, most people probably don't care what you do, but not everyone appreciates the beauty of money disguised as junk. Be nice to those less fortunate than yourself.

I'm glad I dont have to worry about neighbors 10 feet away from me, My next door neigher is like 200yards away from my scrap pile, my pile sits up against woods where it cant be seen from the road cause of the hump in our land and then also the neighbors property and our property line is marked with a long line of tall pine trees cause my dad and the neighbor used to be best friends but now hate each other. So we don't really have to worry about him saying anything about it.

1956 I see your point, I try and stay away from appliances with Freon. I am not paying taxes or have any employees, but it is only a hobby I do not make enough money to open up a business, I am not that efficient. I do not scrap on a daily basis.
I have a lot of stuff in my yard. The county inspector called today and I talked to her a little she is coming out on Friday. She stated that I had solid waste which turned out to be wood, tree rounds and split wood. I informed her that I heat my house with wood and have two fireplaces. She thought that I had a huge pile of broken concrete, I informed her that they were rocks from the property in a pile. The steel that I leave around my yard is stuff that I think is too good to recycle and should be reused like chain-link fence iron fence panels usable sheet metal. Any other metal goes into the dump trailer, unless it is an appliance which I break down for the copper and brass. It is not just metal the inspector commented on no outside storage. I am not really clear on what she wants so I will get a better idea on Friday. Looks like a lot of passion on this topic. I do not know the percentage of home scrappers and business scrappers, I assume there is a lot of home scrappers. thanks David

Just being the straight shooter I am, I would first contact a lawyer about the county making false accusations about you.
Second I would call the county and tell them to hire inspectors that have a clue because she sounds like a complete idiot to me.

I want to follow up with this thread, Look dude some one has called code on you that's really the only way code will come out.You just have to be smart and keep what you have out of sight may be consider getting a little storage unit. Sounds like you have a decent amount of scrap on the property hobby or not they do not want to see it. Outside storage is anything that is being stored outside for period of time.My advise to you and mine only is load up what you have and make a run to the scrap yard before code comes out that should solve the problems with code and the neighbors.
