The camper haulers used to have a trick of putting a soft link in the safety chain that would break the chain if the trailer came loose, so it wouldn't drag the truck into the ditch and wreck it. The DOT caught on and started jumping on the chains at the scale-houses, and if one broke it was an automatic large fine and an 8 hour break till the chain was fixed.
