    Ask the man in charge!

I have been buying some used tires for my truck recently due to the front end being messed up. Anyways that is another thread in itself. But the tire shop I have been going to has had 6 computers sitting there in the front office since I have been going there. It is a family business. The first time I asked the son if he would be interested in selling them. It was a no-go. He said he was gonna get them all fixed and do something with them. Mind you these were dusty as could be and older xp machines. I believe one was a 98. Well anyways two trips later to the same shop. The son is out putting my tire on my truck. I thought to myself, "This will be a good time to ask the father. The man in charge. I started by giving him some cards and said I would be interested in buying the computers piled up over there. He thought I wanted to fix them. I said No id like to buy them. He said "OH! Well I can do that." I ended up paying 5 a piece. They were all complete and a couple had more than expected. So without making a short story long. Here are some pictures.

Yea, the big drives aren't exactly rare, but the higher GB (8+) sort of are. I see them once in a while on P2 or even pentium processor machines. Still a dang nice find.

The Bigfoot drives were sold as inexpensive storage back in the day. They're big because using the larger 5.25" platters enabled them to make drives with the same capacity as a 3.5" drive at a lower cost -- there are fewer platters, so there aren't as many heads. Because of the disk size, though, their access times are slow, and people used to call them "Slugfoot." A lot of OEMs used them because it was a cheap way to make a computer with an impressive amount of storage. They're definitely not the best drives of their time, and I think most of the people who are into old computers would probably avoid using them.

Not a problem. I believe we both learned something. So that is what counts.

Wow, I just wanna say, I was writing my post in response to just the first two posts in this thread. But you guys are so fast -- or I'm so slow -- that something like three new posts slipped in there before mine. So now mine sounds almost rude, because I don't acknowledge anything in those posts -- cuz I didn't see them! This is what I get for goofing off and hanging around SMF when I'm at work!!

Anyway, sorry guys, I would've been gentler if I'd seen what you'd written. But yeah, I know some folks get excited about those Bigfoot drives. Maybe a nostalgia thing. And they did come out with some BIG capacity for their day. Most of the dorky collectors avoid them, though, because they were basically just a way to make a cheaper (and slooower) drive.

The lesson learned here I learned a long time ago as a salesman, you must ask the person who can say yes, all others are authorized only to say no.
"anyone who thinks scrappin is easy money ain't doin it right!"
