most of that stuff would be #1 and #2 heavy melt here which is 260 and 240/ton, nice haul
I hope you received heavy melt for that load.
I never heard of heavy melt til you guys mentioned it here. Then searched it on the forum. All I know is that my yard is paying 160 for prepared/140 UP, and I got 180 for this stuff. Happy as a clam here. I made money, yard made money, win - win.
PJost. You take your scrap to Sioux Falls? They do not pay as well as other locations around the country that I have seen on this forum. I mostly do tin/shred. The price we get in SF is tough. Last time in I had 2,600lbs at $115/ton. That works out to around .06 per pound. I see guys here and on youtube getting almost double that. For all you other guys out there, is there anything we can do to get our yard here in the Dakotas to pay out more. I'm guessing they are making a killing off of us little peons. Great forum! I have learned a lot from everyone here. silverockdzl
Wow! Heavy melt is $300/ton here.
I've never heard of heavy melt. huh.
Scrapper, Scrap Yard Worker, Horse farm worker, Cooler Puller and just plain ''tired''
No, never been to the yard in Sioux Falls. TJM, or TMJ/Shine Bros. Whatever it is. Most of my clients are in ND, so all my stuff ends up in Jamestown, ND. My Uncles started that yard in the early 60s, now their sons, my cousins own/operate it. I started at my dad's junkyard at the age of 8, pulling weeds from between the rows of tractors. I know for a fact my cousins aren't making a killing. Yeah they make money, but it mostly goes back into the yard. There is a lot of expense in equipment and maintenance. They have a lot of trouble getting rail cars out of BNSF as well, which all costs money. IDK, that's just one man's opinion. Your yard may be screwing you for all I know. People think I'm making a killing too. I've spent over a grand on fuel just this week, need an oil change, that's $120, lic. insurance, permits, etc. But, I still whistle while I work. Junkin' is in my blood.
Screw it all, going camping with the family down by Pierre this weekend.
No offense. Just a little depressing watching a guy turn in a chevy truck bed load of broken down light steel computer towers and getting more cash than I get for a 12 foot trailer loaded to the hilt. I believe TJN is the only large scale yard within 2 hours so they can pay low cause there is no other place to take steel. I go other places for non ferrous not so much for better pay but, for the ease of drop off. TJN is a mess to deal with some days. However, they have started dirt work at their new location which will be 5 times bigger and should be open within a year. That will be nice! Overall, TJN has a decent staff that has treated me good so I shouldn't complain much. Have fun camping!
