    So...Where does the money go?

As my part-time scrapping adventure goes full-time for two months (school teacher), I often wonder where the money that we take in each week goes.
For me, about one-half goes straight back into the biz with gas, oil changes, tools, and random fixes. But the rest goes strictly to recreation. (Fishing gear, a charter into the Gulf, Disney and Rays tickets)
S0... Where does your money go?
Obviously, I won't need a response from Sirscrapalot as his will most likely go right into the most famous cooler on the planet!!!

Some of my scrap money gets confiscated to pay for things such as new couches and washer and dryer. That's really to appease the better half so she can find it in her heart to put up with piles of "treasure" in the garage, barn, storage room, shop, sometimes yard and (shhh..... CPUs under the bed).

Much of what's left goes to my current long term full restoration of my 1968 Dodge Superbee. It's a long way from done, but everything on it has been paid for with scrap.

How about a Superbee pic? I'm sure it will soon be the envy of the forum.

Ok, here's a pic. It's still a project but I've got all the body and paint work done.

Nice car Pnut.......restoration jobs are more than a hobby; they're an investment that increases in value over time.
Someday when I get old, I'll work on my 1929 Model A Ford that my dad drove and I still have the title.
Whoops.................I'm already OLD. Now if I could quit scrappin and find time to work on it.

So as not to hijack your thread snorton1, my scrap money seems to go to necessities and to enhance my lifestyle, although my updated pickup truck and trailer are due to scrapping and my next skidsteer will be for the same reason.

My girlfriend's purse (I can't budget for crap!) and sometimes I get some back!

She understands that this isn't just a hobby though and it's becoming a second job, so she always makes sure the truck has gas. Love that woman!

    more scrap, random things.

I haven't been paying as much attention lately, between parting out my personal truck, moving, and scrapping...

It did pay for a weekend vacation, some more tools, my utility trailers. I guess it technically bought my new deer rifle (.270 wsm, browning a bolt... for $400 )

Last years money got banked and it paid for our honeymoon to Cancun this past November.
Before that it helped pay medical bills for my steps leukemia treatment. He is 8 months into remission after 3years of treatment.
Currently it is paying for a lot of household repairs/upgrades.

$450 for the browning a bolt, $300 nikon 4-12x40 scope, brand new soft case, and over a half box of xp3's. He even threw in a LNIB mossberg tactical 22 for $100 that I sold to a buddy for $150 before I even picked it up.

So, in reality, I got the gun for ~$350, plus all the other mumbo jumbo.

I'm very happy with it. My wife keeps catching me playing with it. Haven't gotten to shoot it yet though.

Brake job for the wife's car, pay for tools in cash, and currently $300 saved towards a scrapping trailer.

All of my scrap money has gone towards my 79 Camaro project. So far I have paid every dime of the project with scrap(some actual scrap and some reselling stuff I pick up) and have about 1000.00 left over for future stuff. End the end I will have it all paid for with scrap since I don't have alot more left to spend on it.

    Here is how it started

This is what it looks like now

A lot of mine goes back in to buy more junk and keep my business growing. Then the general necessities- fuel, maintenance, insurance and a little advertising. From the beginning, I pledged to myself that I would keep my overhead LOW and concentrate on growing the business. One guy (me), a 9000# GVWR diesel truck, a chop saw, a few old transmission dipsticks for checking cat cores and a big steel building with a gravel floor and no heat... That's pretty much my whole operation, and it works. The truck also doubles as my daily driver, which helps me justify the cost of it.

Some days, I could really use a hired hand, but I get it done. On others, a 3500 dually or box van with a lift gate would come in handy, but my Ram 2500 does fine. A building with heat would be sweet in the winter, but I refuse to take on another mortgage or pay rent when I own the building I'm in. All of these things are quite tempting at times, but I've seen one too many guys in this business try to go too big, too fast and go under.

There are things in life that I take time to enjoy, and a good month of business can help with them. Spoiling my wife is always fun I also enjoy antiques, and slowly fixing up our 1896 Victorian house. The auto scrap/core business has helped me with these things. On the days I think "What the (expletive) am I doing this for?!?", I remember that. You know, the days where you pull a back muscle, smash a fingernail, put a scratch on your truck and end up making 20 bucks for the day It all works out in the end.

Sparrow-have you looked into a waste oil burning furnace for your shop?

A buddy of mine has one.

They are not cheap I think his was between 3 and 5 grand.

HOWEVER-he always gets donated fuel for it and in the 5 years he has had it he has already paid for it a couple times over with all the free fuel he gets for it.

You CAN find used ones occasionally as well.

OR what about a wood stove?

SparrowMetals a while back on SMF someone brought up the idea of making money producing and selling wooden pellets for pellet stoves. There is already a good bit of competition in my area for e-waste and metal so the idea of making money from wood is appealing to me. I've been doing some research and it seems promising. Maybe you could justify the cost of a pellet stove and pellet making equipment to your self if it could be used to help make you money. At any rate it might be something worth looking into.
