i don't take things apart piece by piece unless there is really a bunch of copper inside... usually just scrap washers & dryers whole... but i always crack open the dryers and feel around the bottom for coins... and found just over $14 in the last dryer i picked up the other day! so alwys remember to do that...
I have found if you take the dryer apart you can also get the coins that get hung up in the brackets. I will remove the drum by removing the top of the dryer. This allows me easy access to the bottom of the dryer, which also allows me to easily remove the motor, which sells for more than steel scrap price.
