A great example of this is last weeks state auction I went to. I bought some old dell 1950 servers for $20 each. I got 32 of them. As luck would have it. Not really I cracked a few of them open before buying them. They each had 16gb of ram and 2 cpu's. Instead of just scrapping them the ram sells for $60 a set and the 2 cpu's sell for $50 a set on
ebay. So thats making 5 times the money I spent on them in just 2 parts. Now I can sell the power supplies the raid controllers and the HCA cards out of them as well for even more profit. To bad they didnt have any drives though.
Now getting back to what they bought. Lets just say those vaults had 146gb SAS drives in them. I would have bought the drives for $1320 after testing. Not to mention each unit worth at least $100 each without the drives. Thats if they are SAS units. If they are older scsi units then your talking less money for sure.
