Sirscrapalot - Wishing NH would take his Black flies back
>The yellow fly is a fierce biter. Like mosquitoes, it is the female fly that is responsible for inflicting a bite. The males are mainly pollen >and nectar feeders.
It's the female that bites, while the male is out working hard. Yep, sounds about right.
lol
Black flies are the exact same here. They get plentiful some summers down in Nags Head. Not so bad up by me. An I think the soundside gets the yellow an black. People always *****ing about the flies. Must be yankees.
Sirscrapalot - The female praying mantis will bite the head off the male after sex...an you thought smoking was bad after?
lol..now I see why you put the link only.
Sirscrapalot - ha ha ho ho hee hee.
The yellow fly is about the size of a normal house fly with delta wings. It is as tenacious and stubborn as a house fly. yellow jacket stings and it hurts for a couple of days. A mosquito itches for a day or so. A hornet is mean and aggressive and hurts like he388 for a day or so. Most bees will leave you alone if you don't mess with them but they do hurt some when they sting, for a time. Up north yellow jackets can be a bumble bee, a wasp or a hornet depending on where you live.
Here a yellow jacket is a small yellow and black bee about half the size of a honey bee. They can, on occasion be found under old tires , logs and such in a small hornet like hive but, those are new hives. the yellow jacket lives underground in hives from the size of a car to the size of a house in populations that can reach hundreds of thousands. If you google them you will see cars and even whole houses taken over by them in one huge hive. They are super aggressive and attack in the hundreds or thousands. There sting is similar to a Fire ant and burns like a hot needle for a few days.
All of the above go away after , at most , a few days. The yellow fly is a whole other experience. They bite not sting. The bite is very like a horse fly bite in the pain range, however they like to bit you on an existing sore if possible. Like a pesky fly or Mosquito they do not give up until they get you. You can not swat them, repellants don't work. The sores they create can last for weeks. There is nothing that will take the pain and itch away. I swear as soon as the sore starts to heal the same fly will come back and bit you again on top of the same spot.. I would much rather be bitten or stung by any thing else and I have had them all. Now you know. It's meaner, tougher, smarter and will never give up, and will put a hurt on you that lasts for weeks. Once you encounter a yellow fly you will never forget it.
I'm buying you a can of hairspray an a lighter for Christmas Olddude.
Might set off the yard on fire, but you might feel better if you manage to make it all toasty.
When I was younger there was a wasp nest in a bush in the apartment complex I lived in. So we told the maintenance guy. He grabbed a thing of hair spray a pack of matches...no more nest, or bush for that matter. lol.
Black flies are quite similar up here on the sandbar. You get bit by one you'll remember it.

They sound like nasty little Boogers!
What to do
A trapping method homeowners can use, which does not involve the use of pesticides, is called the “sticky black ball” trap. Basically it is a beach ball, (milk jugs work just as well and are easier to hang) painted black and coated with a sticky substance. The sticky substance is called Tangle-Trap and comes in a spray or liquid applicator. It can be found at local Ace Hardware stores.
These devices are hung from a tree limb using string, in a shaded area, about 4 feet above the ground. Movement of the ball by the wind attracts the flies, thinking it is an animal, they land, get stuck, and die on the ball. Several of these balls will reduce the local adult populations.
Birds are not attracted to the ball nor can be “stuck” as the adhesive is only strong enough for insects.
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!
