Well, I enjoy your posts about the job. Any time you feel like it, add more because some of us don't get to work in a yard and don't get the behind the scenes access that you do now. I'm happy for you having a job you like. Keep up the good work.

Nope. As a matter of fact I'm on my way out the door for my long run tonight after the truck warms up! All my free time is still spent scrapping and doing pickups from my peeps!! I just don't have time to turn it in so I load the trailer and let hubby or dad bring it up and offload for me and I do the non ferrous in the morning when I get to work before we open.

Boss called me into the office today and said he is putting me down for another raise, I just got one a month ago! he said I'm doing a wonderful job.

he also said to buy a pair of good coveralls and a good pair of shoes and bring him the receipt. I just bought a pair but they aren't waterproof like I thought and didn't want to spend a kazilion dollars on another pair yet but if the boss is buying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol, he's always worried about me more than the guys I think because I'm a gal.

That's great! You earned it! Now go get some good boots! If he's an old timer he can't help it being different towards you. That's how we were raised. Besides you need good warm waterproof boots. Its cold out there.

Spent almost 2 hours with him in the office this morning ''in a meeting.'' he showed me a LOT of stuff; paperwork, orders, who to call, how to balance the book each morning, where he files stuff, orders for the following month, prices, some bank stuff, etc. And he is making me my own set of keys to the building for opening up.

He said the more I learn the more responsibility I get. Lol, I didn't think I could get any more!

We talked about how he got started in the business as well as how I got into scrapping and why did I take the job. He told me he was surprised when he got the call from the guy that runs his other place about hiring me (the manager here had talked to him about me and told him to call my boss and tell him he knew me and I could do the job). He said he is happy and surprised how hard I work and that other people that come here (buyers, sellers) say look how she is hopping around like a rabbit lol.

He said he is happy with how I talk to customers, how I interact with them and how I ''teach'' them in a nice way (his words not mine).

I told him I thought I was pretty smart about scrap before I worked for him but I really only knew just the tip of the iceburg!

I caught an almost ''oops'' by the other guy this morning, he almost bought a granite sink as AL but I told him no, look at it closer and break it with a hammer. I knew what it was and the first clue is that most sinks like that are made from cast metal not AL. It also feels different and sounds different when you bang on it. But once I broke it he could see it was made from stone. So I taught him something today but he also doesn't scrap on the side (he never knew tv rabbit ears are usually always brass) but he's been there long enough he shouldn't have been so quick to assume either.

Good for you NA. It sounds like your boss is also a good.....boss. He sees smarts and initiative and rewards it. He also doesn't see it as a threat, so he is training you to take over his job. That's a good thing, it means you can continue moving on up. The opposite can happen, too, but you have lucked out. Grab the ball and run with it!!

The bottom line in business is sometimes how many people work for you...the more that work for you the more you get paid!!

    Keep it up!!

By the way, you haven't mentioned any treasures you have found while at work!! There's gotta be a few things you coveted or even bought from the boss when they landed in the yard!!! 'Fess up!! :>)

    Jon.

Love your thread. It is a double bonus, a success story and insight into a yard. Your perspective is a huge asset to the scrap yard and I am glad they appreciate it. Keep up the good work. Congratulations.

Lol, the last thing I offered to buy was a tool box filled with 50 lbs of hand tools, he said its just steel right? yeah. So he let me have it for nothing! I'm always out on the pile looking to add to my tools.

There was one thing I thought would be fun to have, it was a large round steel ''cage'' with a seat in it. You roll the person around a yard in it. We played with it a bit before it went in the roll off.

One day last month a guy brought in a GMC like mine that I wanted to offer to buy for parts. Before I got the chance the boss had the guy that brought it with his front end loader put it in the roll off when I was with another customer. I walked out the door just in time to see a 5000 lb tractor dropped in on top of it. . Few choice words came outta my mouth just then lol. Before the tractor was dropped on it I woulda had no problem going in the rolloff to pull what I could.

I am also impressed with your boss being able to recognize a great employee worthy of entrusting with more responsibilities. Mike
