Random drive by quoting! (It's on topic tho!)

All I got is my balls and my word, and I don't break them for no body! - Tony Montana(Al Pacino), from Scarface the movie.

Word/rep..pretty much the same. Break either an it's like trying to catch water in a Styrofoam cup with holes in the base, to repair it or restore faith in those you lost it with.

I've said it before I have lots of customer service an selling experience in my background. One thing I always stood by(Still do, but I no longer do retail) is I wouldn't bull**** when it came to my opinion on a product. My customers always loved me for it, cause I didn't sugarcoat or blow some up their asses. They knew if they asked I'd give them what I thought, an not the company line which usually included several helpings of bull****. lol. Kind of like on here, but they could see my smiling face when I was being a smart ass.

So yea...your rep an how you treat your customers is a very big thing. More people need to realize this. Another important thing is..the customer IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT! Far from it. Sometimes you just have to say goodbye to a customer if they become to *****y, high maintenance, etc. I don't know what your health is worth, but mine is worth a helluva lot more then the stress I'd have if I put up with every PITA client/Customer.

One of the things I have over my competition is my rep. People know if I say I'll do something I do it, if I say something, I stand by it, etc etc. People know with me they get good service, an no bull****. An that my friends will pay of off for you more then you can ever imagine. People's faith in your work an you is something you never want to lose..cause as I said above with the cup an water..it can be a real ***** to earn it back.

I'm polite an courteous to all I do business with, even the jerks. I have a limit tho, an won't hesitate to blacklist someone if they become a PITA. Treat me like a servant an I'll gladly pack my stuff up an move on. Life is to short to put up with such things. If you can't treat me in a respectable manner, you can find someone else to haul your stuff, etc. Money is nice, but being happy with my life an not stressed out all the time is even more important to me.

That's part of the problem with the world today. It's all Me, me me me me. I was brought up to treat people with respect no matter what they do for a living, color they are, sex, etc. People want to treat you like crap an expect you to kiss their ass while doing it. This scrapper don't play that.

Sorry for the rant..haha! But yea..keep that rep up, it pays off in spades.

Don't work for free, and don't get a reputation for working for free.

That being said, be helpful. Especially with repeat customers or when doing a large job. Take 5 min to help them lift something, or hold something they are putting a bolt into. Don't spend hours helping for free though, or it will become expected and word will get around.

This is sort of related. there is a farmer that I help out from time to time. He scraps, but doesn't mess around with small stuff. I give him scrap advice, and share my connections. He gives me some of his "clutter": that isn't worth holding onto. If I stop by to say hi, i help with what he is doing for a few min, or if he calls and says he needs a hand for 30 min, I won't take any money. He has already done a few favors for me, and I am sure if I called him right now, he would load up some tools and meet me anywhere.

Respect other people and their time. Also respect yourself and your time.

also, if you are changing plans so you can meet a deadline, tell the person. I usually say "I'm busy that day, but I think I can move things around. Let me call you back later/tomorrow" That way they know that not only are they important, but you are consulting your other client before changing plans.
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

To add to the Mattinthehat's excellant post I remind you everyone makes errors. What sets us apart from our comlpetetors is how we handle our errors. Face the guy you failed in some way and admit to it. Explain what you did wrong and what you will do in the future to prevent it happing again.

A breif personal story: I got a kidney transplant a little over two years ago. The Dr who did the transplant made an error that was caused me to be low on fluids. He came to my bedside and took full responsibility for it. He stated he thought he had provided enough fluid during the operation but was mistaken. He assured me in the future he would pay close attention and not allow this to happen again.

I have respect for this doctor so many are concerned that they would get sued for making the error and admitting to it. Other doctors have made errors in my medical proceedures, he is the only one to stand in front of me and tell the truth. Mike

It seems like we've all had to learn that the hard way......like so many issues in life.
