    Scrap Mercury

    nitrometal2014 | eBay

A dumpster from a hospital netted me 6 or 7 blood presser gauges wile the case is AL it's the measurement glass tube that is of interest . The Mercury is stored in a area of device and as pressure is put to hose Mercury travails up . the measurement glass tube looks to be 18 inches long and as thick as a pencil.
Wile this devices is great to measure pressure, I can't think of any way to use for my needs .
As seen by someone selling Mercury on e bay , is Mercury valuable, I have a dozen or so Mercury switches from thermostats but this item has me curious

Mercury is a serious health hazard!!!
It is toxic and an environmental hazard.
My advice would be not to have anything to do with it.

I know I can handle safely , The value must be real to someone All metal is of interest to me .

The jury is out as to the health of scrapping metal in general
and is still to be decided . Have you ever noticed a film like feel & color on your hands as you handle metals
that is not just a grime my friend , nor is it a nature walk of touching trees & nature , But I am sure what we touch is one with us.

as far as i know, it is one of those things where the permits and equipment required to handle it properly actually result in a charge to recycle it. that is also why it is so expensive to purchase anything with more than a few drops of mercury in it. Just imagine if you needed a $10,000k (just a guess on the amount) /year permit to dispose of copper, would you still keep grabbing it for free if it was worth $2.50/lb but you had to spend $10k to get it to begin with? probably would charge your ppl to take it still, just saying.

This seller - nitrometal2014 | eBay - is not from USA so I wonder if that has anything to do with selling . Still E bay offers a Sell it yourself , so if I have a clear path I can try .

well, if that seller isn't from the USA, i am betting that the USA better not find out he is shipping it to the USA without the receiver being permitted to receive it. I wouldn't want that fine.

    CH,

Its a free country. You can research the legalities of buying, selling and shipping mercury. No need to listen to irrational fears about mercury jumping out of the bottle and stalking you!! Since it is still used in lots of home and industrial items I expect some rules but I wouldn't expect anything overly onerous.

What is very interesting is that someone at the hospital was empty-headed enough to toss it in the trash....I would expect that in an environment like that "they" would be savvy about what they tossed and how they should toss it. I guess there is always someone who is more worried about how far away the end of their shift is than what they are doing.

    Jon.

if you were referring to my statement as an irrational fear, read this and tell me if you want to be that guy: there is a series of "uh oh" to be read in this text. just like anything else, its only illegal if you get caught, but I would sure not to want to be the one getting caught.

I'm betting that being violated is a $50 fine... sure

From the little I did read from your short cut's . Seems that a main concern is mercury being incinerated . & no doubt most any metal that can be melted into the environment and into clouds and our water with precipitation is the issue . But it is food for thought as to what a person can burn in a fire pit giving little thought.
As they might be burning trash with some batteries in trash

Well those s****y cfl light bulbs contain mercury. People (not me) are bringing them into their homes everyday.

Here's the cleanup instructions when you break one:

Quicksilver (liquid metallic mercury) Even if taken by mouth and some people have injected into veins found it not to appear to result in systemic toxicity
Bit if one can cause it to release mercury vapor or mercury converted to mercury elements ,
like Mercuric cyanide that will kill you .

I can see why as a child at school teacher's could show students liquid metallic mercury and as you see I am still here. Liquid metallic mercury and selling it as is , is worth some truth in reading about it.
It seems if it came down to a court case it can be stated - liquid metallic mercury appears not to result in systemic toxicity .

Regardless of the chemistry and toxicity reports, mercury in all states is EPA regulated. Kinda like getting a ticket for blowing a stop sign with nobody around. No harm no foul, but if a cop sees you.... guess what? I get where you're coming from and I agree with almost everything you have said. But when it comes down to dollars and cents (or sense, either fits) it just doesn't add up to me wanting to take the risk of messing with that kind of stuff. If you do, good luck my friend.

I still have three of those plastic maze toys with a drop of mercury in it, one of them was shaken up so much it's splattered all over the inside.

I did empty each pressure gauge Mercury into a thick glass container and it is very heavy for it's volume I also keep the glass container in a plastic mayo jar .I wrap the glass with a rag. It's very safe . Yes I put a note on it POISON !!

    Wink

Pure mercury is almost non toxic to the human body - the issue is when HG mixes with other elements it becomes very toxic.
You could drink pure mercury, and have less than 0.02% absorption rate ... [LINK]

As to value of pure mercury is some were around $6.00 / LB [LINK]
