That an I dont know about your state, But AC theft is common here and when the inspectors come in and request seller information and you cant prove a EPA certified tech removed the freon, talk about some where around $25000 fine...

I know of some systems that have leaks and require charging them up every year or two. What does your inspectors say in that case?

Well guys, I understand your concerns, but those AC's could have just as easily gone into the trash where the freon would not have been recovered. It could have been dropped in the shred pile (many, many are) and the refrigerant would not have been recovered.

The only reason refrigerants are such a no no is because they are required for the western way of life and comfort. It is for the reason of taxation. It is another way for government to steal your money. The same way that taxation of carbon is taxation of the western way of life and comfort. I know some of you here undoubtedly feel very strongly about these issues, but, I think it flies in the face of logic. "Science" keeps on changing their minds and recommendations and many are very quick to adopt the newest "scientific" advice.

Right now, we are being told that we need to use "special" light bulbs... for the good of the planet. They contain mercury and if broken, the advice is to leave the house and have a professional clean the residue. I say, "If the government is going to demand this type of resolution to the breakage of a bulb they force you to use, make them live up to their own requirements." "Accidentally" drop a couple bulbs in a government building and make them live up to the same bar we are supposed to live up to. Throw out six or seven of these bulbs into a government garbage can. Make them dispose of them as a hazardous waste as they want YOU to do.

If they want to recover every bit of refrigerant "for the good of the planet", then let them do it. Until THEY live up to their expectations they have of us, screw them. I CAN TOSS THOSE AC's INTO THE TRASH AND THE GOVERNMENT TRUCK WILL PICK THEM UP AND CRUSH THEM AND RELEASE THE FREON TO THE ENVIRONMENT. If they can do it, so can I.

    [/RANT!]

I totally agree with that, but it is what it is. and it is illegal, so wether the govt is Doing it or not you have a chance to be fined for it and it is still illegal.

kbob, according to the EPA any system with less than a 15% leak rate per year is accepted, it should be fixed but is acceptable. Anything over MUST be repaired asap. Anyways, directly releasing the Freon is highly illegal. Major fine and they even reward people who turn in people illegal releasing it. Leaks with one installed is a little different. i was more so pointing out on the knowledgeable and purposeful releasing of the refrigerant.

Also, don't take me wrongly. I don't have a strong belief against burning or dumping. Don't really care either way. Just wanted to add the information. Herd about a electrician here that got busted releasing Freon from a heat-pump. lost his licence, fine around 20 grand and the homeowner was rewarded for turning him in.
