You can buy second hand gauges- lines- scales etc. But I think you need to buy new tanks to put the recovered gas into.

You need a different tank for every gas.
You can't mix two gases in the same tank.

There's a fridgeration shop across the road from where I scrap, so I will ask them for info soon.

Well, now, lets see....A bounty on tattling on someone who deliberately releases refrig gases to the atmosphere...

How much, did you say, was the bounty....$10K?

Everyone seems to know a yard that deliberately ignores gases in refrig equipment and just squirt it to the sky....

$10K equals a h*ll of a lot of scrapping....

Therefore:
Why isn't there a footrace to the nearest phone to cash in on the bounty?

Sawmill has a point. Everyone says that their yard just throws them in with the shred. If I were you guys, I'd call the EPA and tell them so for a reward of $10k as well as having benefited the environment and the generations to come, such as my children and my grandchildren.

No. They were very heavy and I accidentally dropped one on the other and the thin copper coil pipes were ruptured on both units. Neither had any gas in them. I cut my finger.

The EPA won't believe stories like that one if it happens again. Kind of amazing that by dropping one on the other, you got both units to rupture lines.

The Clean Air Act states that the EPA MAY rewarded informants UP TO $10,000 upon the SUCCESFUL CONVICTION of the person or company releasing the refrigerant.

That being said, there is no guarantee of a reward.

If you are scrapping two items. I wouldn't yell at you for releasing into atmo. But if you are doing tons of ac worth; then you are doing no one any good. If you can; maybe crimp the part that has the freon in it. I am not sure if this is possible to bypass or if the freon item is where all the goodies are as I have yet to scrap an AC unit.

Scrappers ratting out yards? Well, I don't think the yards bat an eye at doing the reverse.

But someone said the law is "...leading to a conviction...." so the authorities won't do the work. They want you to come to them with proof that there is dirty work at the crossroads.

No quite so easy as just reporting them. I guess there's a catch to everything.

luckly my yard will recover freon from ac's, friges, freezers, water coolers, and dehumidafires. They got a shed at the end of the sheet iron pile. I just pull the wires and fan motors and done. They get the rest. I hate loosing out on ac rads, But atleast im doing the right thing.

Well, I went to the yard and point blank asked today. You need a notarized receipt to recover the rads, copper and motor from wallies. I can dump them into the shred pile as long as they are whole. So... It looks like I will be killing the polar bears.

If there is a 10k reward I wouldn't hesitate to turn that place in, there is no excuse for being ignorant like that. If you can't handle your scrap properly than they shouldn't be in that buisness

You're right. I will put them on the curb and make sure that the garbage man picks them up. That way Sarasota county will be responsible for any gas leakage.

Why don't you find someone in or around Sarasota County that is certified to recover refrigerant and work a deal with them to sell them the units. I'm pretty sure 1956 is in Florida, not sure the general area, but know that he deals with A/Cs.

Well, I chopped those big boyz apart and separated the loot. Four big al and cu coils got me $45. The motors got me $10. the shred got me another $10 and I still have the ICW and the copper turns. I went in and the guy at the scale tells me I need to get the okay for the coils, so I go in. I show the gal a receipt for the tear out and install and she says I need a company letterhead. I pull off the front sheet with my co name and address and she lights up and tell me that this changes everything. She did not know I had a business. She filled out some paperwork and signed, I signed and she notarized and she told me I am good to go. I can scrap all the AC's I find with no questions asked.

My good sir, that would be far to easy. Easier to just release and go. /end sarcasm

This is why I got folks who will recover for me if necessary. I keep saying I'll get the type one license for appliances an such but I get distracted doing other things, an said buddy doesn't mind the wee bit of work.
