    Rear window club

Who here is a member of the busted out back truck window club? I put a piece of tubular steel in the back of the s-10 and did not lay it down good. The next stop sign, I heard a big boom and it slid forward and shattered the window. I thought of a good idea? (not) put in a big tv projection screen cut with a jig saw. It fit nice and taped in in 10 minutes. However, It has some magnifying qualities when the sun hit it, It was like my hair was on fire. Well a little silver spray paint took care of that. Looked on u-tube for a video of how to change out. a razor knife is all I need A local bone yard wants 60 bucks for a used one. Lqk parts list one for 25 on their web site. They had a 50% off sale this weekend, missed that.

Haven't done the back window but I did crack the windshield in my old lumina by trying to wedge a couple chairs in the front seat. Made a nice spider web crack.

but it got cracked NOT from scrapping

was involved in an accident last year
some guy hit me very hard from behind

his company have still not paid me

my head(good thing im thick headed) went back, from the impact n smashed into the glass- cracking it

now i have a piece of perspex in place of glass
i think its better, cos i dont have to worry about cracking/braking it when i have a lot of stuff to carry in the back.

Not sure if this counts, but many years ago, I had an E350 van with a bucket on it that I was working from. I was over heating a little so while I was going from pole to pole working, I kept the hood lifted up a bit to help it cool down for the ride home.

Yep. I forgot to secure the hood and driving down the road, when I hit about 45 MPH, the hood flew back and shattered the windshield.

I think I pooped a little when that happened.

Just the sliding part, got a replacement from a yard for 10 bucks, spent more time trying to force it into the track than anything else.

When you said you put in a TV screen I was thinking "oh no, he's gonna burn his truck down". Those things are Fresnel lenses and are amazing at focusing light into a heat ray. Good thing it heated you up first and got you to cover it up. I'd still remove it as soon as possible.

Check Fresnel lens death ray on you_tube.

Gotta be careful with loads.. Not going to throw out specifics but I know of someone who was driving a van without a cage and filled with subway tile to the top, instant stop and it all flew forward fast and decapitated him....

Part of the club a couple of times, but never a result from scrapping. Twice fire wood was thrown threw the window. First time before kids, second time by my oldest son. The other time was a loader bucket filling the truck with manure. Same truck with all three, 75 Chevy 1/2 ton. Right now the truck needs a new motor, a spring project.

    *Raises hand*

last winter in sub zero temps I tossed a ramp into the back of the truck over the sides and it caught the bottom edge of the window and shattered the whole thing. I didn't realize the board across the back was down until it was too late, I think one of my sons had driven it and put the board down. I drove around with green garbage bags duck taped to the window for two days until they could get me in. I think it happened on a Saturday and they weren't open until Monday.

I First time I ever shop vacced the driveway of glass and snow lol not to mention the truck. I still find pieces of glass to this day.

Had a VW Karmann Ghia once...wasn't running, paid a friend to load it up on his flatbed and tow it home for me. Joked with him, and told him watch out, the dam$ thing was possessed.

Halfway home he looks in the rear view and turns white as a ghost, tells me not to turn around, and he starts slowing down ever so carefully.

When we came to a stop I turn around and the front bumper of the Ghia is up against the glass of the rear window...somehow the hooks came loose.

I have seen the end result of a house painters van after it hit the end of a bridge railing at 25mph......

Lets just say the whole inside was a yellow/white color except for the drivers silhouette over the steering wheel, up the dashboard and across the frount windscreen.......

I got my next door neighbour to drive me and my scrap to the scrapmetal dealers. He mentioned being a member of the 'rear window club'...
So I found a couple of sheets of the corrigated plastic sheet thats used for real estate signs. Positioned them across each other over the rear window of his pickup. Light and easy to store behind the seats, easy to clean too. He was tickled pink with the idea.

He was also tickled pink with my payment system for use of his 'ute' (NZ short for utility pickup)
    $5...... (what?)
    "Yep, $5" ($5?!)
"Yep, $5... $5 for the ute, $5 for petrol, $5 for your time, second trip $5 for petrol, $5 for your time, third trip $5 for petrol, $5 for your time and a extra $5 for no screwups and $5 for your time since we did a 'pickup' at the hardware store for me on the way back"

Its only 16 blocks to the scrapdealers. But im not carrying it that far......
And the value of the Ali cans that get given to me anyway....$40..
The whole thing only cost me.....$5.....

In high school, one of my friends had a red '64 convertible Ford Falcon. We had to get it ready to go to spring break so we pulled the engine and tranny out in my step Dad's welding shop to swap for a better one we found at a junk yard. I went to the yard with another friend in his '72 Ranchero which overheated. We put water in the radiator, got the engine and on the way back, of course the hood flew up. Not thinking about the engine, Mark slammed on the brakes.

That engine and tranny was sitting in the back on a good bit of grease, oil and trans fluid. It shot forward and slammed into the back of the cab breaking the glass. I still remember seeing a silhouette of myself in the splintered glass just before it hit the front windshield and went everywhere. When we stopped, we had a trans tail shaft sticking in between us. I didn't know until then that the Rancheros had only a single wall bed and not double, bed and cab like a pickup.

We did get the engine in the Falcon and headed to the beach......broke down 9 miles down the road. Had to hitch a ride with a car load of girls headed to the beach so all was not lost. Oh the good ol' days.
