the one thing u have to hold on to is that the items stolen were not small things that are easy to hide
nor are there bound to be many tractors n trailers like that

if u have pics, make copies and pass to the local scrap yard & also to any other yards that are a bit further away- since the geniuses who stole might have taken it to the yards that are further away to avoid getting caught..

people like this- they should be stripped naked, tied to your vehicle & dragged for a good few miles.
and then handed over to the police

This thread has been very interesting. A couple of perspectives and then a story:

First all drug addicts are not scrappers and not all scrappers are drug addicts.
Second, more theft happens in urban communities than rural (not sure if it is a proportional statement or not) because in rural areas every neighbor knows who owns what. If my trailer goes down the road without my truck, a neighbor will assume I loaned it to someone. If they do not recognize the other vehicle, they call me to find out the scoop. Sometimes having nosy neighbors pays dividends. Therefore it is a surprise the culprit in this case was not seen by someone.
Thirdly, a scrapper is a scrapper, a thief is a thief, an addict is an addict, and sometimes they can be all of the above. We have had scrappers steal from other scrappers, scrappers set others up to lead us off track, and in one case had a scrapper thief steel from us only to have it stolen by another scrapper that worked for us at his home. This ended with both scrappers in jail asking us to bail them out if they did not do it again.
Fourth, if a scrap yard pays in cash and does not require a statement that you are the rightful owner, they do not care if it is stolen or not. I have offered to buy scrap trailers from a yard in one piece and been refused. I was told I could buy any part or all parts after cutting it up, but not the entire trailer. I will not do business with this type of yard.

This story was told earlier on the forum, but could not be found. A thief made a deal with a dishonest scrapper to scrap an entire farm with equipment, vehicles, and tools dating back to the 1930's. The dishonest scrapper offered a cash price, paid in advance, and proceeded to scrap the farm. A neighbor knew the owner was on a combine crew down south and this scrap was his retirement. The neighbor called the sheriff. The sheriff confronted the scrapper who told him he bought the scrap for cash. During the investigation, the thief denied being part of it and the scrapper had no proof. Scrapper accepted a plea deal to return all the scrap and profits and no charges would be filed. He returned everything except his down payment and profit for the efforts. Farmer took the scrapper to court for the rest of the scrap, but he could not prove he did not receive everything back. The thief is a female and now lives with the farmer. Was this three thieves trying to out do each other?

Moral of the story, live by the sword, die by the sword.

With this being said I will probably return to the ranch and find all of my "crap" I mean "scrap" missing without proof.

I HATE the words thief and scrapper used in conjunction. These people responsible for this are not true scrappers, they are thieves, plain and simple.

I have had things stolen including a trailer, car hauler, copper, catalytic converters, etc but in neither case did I consider them stolen by a scrapper just simply thieves.

WE must drive these people out.

In and around my place the last few years, with the Florida castle, and stand your ground laws, thievery has become a very dangerous profession.

A thief generally doesn't have a gun hes too stupid and greedy, he has sold it for drugs or money and he is stupid enough to bring a knife to a fight with an AK.

Well I went to the yard this morning and I saw some of my stolen stuff: a plow and a bush hog, sitting out by the fence where they sell stuff. No trailer or hay forks. I went to the office and told them about it and they had sold the hay forks to an employee. They made ME BUY MY OWN HAY FORKS BACK from the employee that bought it and they made me buy my other stuff back at scrap prices. Then they looked up the records and saw that the guy had dropped it off on my trailer and had driven off with the trailer. While this was happening, the guy drives up with (undoubtedly stolen copper wire(no trailer). I called the cops but they didn't arrive in time. Under advice from one of the employees at the yard, I went to the walmart to look for him. Sure enough he was there. I called the cops again and he was arrested for receiving stolen property, however, they let him go after charging him. The bail didn't cost a thing. I have his name, and very shortly I'll have his address and tomorrow my Father and I will be taking a trip to his house to see about my trailer with my Glock under my jacket just in case. Long story short, I will not be using that yard anymore and I will recover my trailer. Also D. H. Griffin Wrecking Co. will be getting a very unhappy email to their corporate offices about these stolen property policies.

you should have called the cops even a threat to do so would most likely gotten your stuff back no charge. That yard was dealing in stolen property, especially after you told them the hay fork was yours. chances are very good they will still buy from these creeps.

Really surprising in your small town how some one thinks they can steal and use in the very same small town with out getting caught

I'm glad you found out who it was, Steel, and also that you got a lot of your items back. That yard is just as bad as the thief, as far as I'm concerned. Here in PA, our State Police would have ruined their day, and it would likely have NOT cost you a cent to recover what was rightfully yours. They may not have been criminally charged if it could not be proven that they knew the material was stolen, but they WOULD have had to forfeit the material back to you.

I've seen it happen here, when one of our less-reputable core buyers bought stolen converters from a known thief. The rightful owner came with the police and identified exactly the ones that were his- The very same ones the core buyer had purchased from the known thief. No charges against the buyer (but the actual thief got nailed), but the material went back to its rightful owner. The buyer who purchased the stolen cats received ZERO compensation from anyone. I'm sure the thief was ordered by the court to pay the buyer restitution for the amount he was paid, but the rightful owner did not have to buy his own material back, nor should he have had to.

I got all of my stuff back. I confronted the men and they apologized profusely which didn't mean a thing to me because I know they aren't sorry. They'll do it again in a heart beat. They were mainly just terrified that I had found them. I knew their families and I told there Mothers about what they did because they specifically asked me not to tell them. Let me repeat that. These 27 year olds asked me not to tell their Mothers about their thievery. Anyway, I got all of my stuff back except for the chains off of my trailer because D. H. Griffin "Doesn't know what happened to them after they went to the back room." Read: An employee took these and doesn't want to return them." D.H. Griffin corporate will hear about this. The thieves had sold my trailer to a salvage dealer and I got that back this afternoon. They were charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor and the salvage dealer as well as the scrap yard were charged with misdemeanors. This won't mean much because the yard is part of a billion dollar corporation but I take what I can get.

And if your out any money then take the thieves to small claims court. It's your word against theirs and you already have proof of their honesty.
A couple of strikes in your favor.

I had to take a person to small claims one time cause they had rented a game system from us along with games. Refused to bring it back and basically laughed at us in our small town. Filled out the paperwork, and he didn't show for the court appearance. The court rescheduled and again a no-show. 3rd time the court filed a warrant for his arrest, they finally found him and in the pokey he went. His bond was what was owed to me plus costs, and when he bonded out I had my money and he had multiple charges added to his record.

Stealing is probably the second oldest profession, as there are always going to be those that want "Money for Nothing". As a business owner for over twenty years, most of my losses have come from people on the "Inside". There's nothing that makes me madder than finding someone close to me, stealing from me. I've had both employees and family steal from me, even family that was drawing a pay check. When the employee is family/employee at the same time, it really hurts.

I have only prosecuted a couple of times, when and only when I have a 100% solid case. I will terminate for "simple cause", what is simple cause? Math, you have to know the people you work with. That takes time, but if you take the time to notice, "YOU WILL KNOW". How does math come in to play? You have to learn how to put numbers to everything, because that's where the money is! I can't think of a single loss, where the numbers when added up told the truth. Put the numbers with what you see and hear with your own eyes/ears you will know honest from dishonest people. I also always refer to a good friend, LA county sheriff who has always provided me with good prospective judgement and advise. His comment on thief's, a very poor occupation choice, not to many that are long term successful with that career move. There are way more remorseful and learned ex-thieves then those that continue to take what is not theirs. Another bit of wisdom from my friend, thief's almost always have inside information, they have more than likely been on your property before or know someone that has. So when looking for 'WHO DONE IT", start with those closest to you.

I hate labels almost as much as a crook, all crooks don't use drugs. There are a lots of causes for addictions and no single answer for preventing addictions. One thing for sure, it affects all of us and all of us have a lot of work to do in that topic.

There is one label I like, "SCRAPPER", nothing wrong with that label if one chooses to educate!

I would never go back there, ever.

There's a difference between an honest mistake and knowingly buying stolen property. These guys almost certainly did the latter and you all know as well as I do that this wasn't an isolated incident.

I would put in the letter that is being sent to their corporate office that you will not be a returning scrap metal dealer. These guys might not get much from the law but I'd be surprised if their bosses didn't nail them to the wall and send them packing

Be sure to ask the County Prosecutor if they will also tack on a trespassing charge as well. I would find out who the County Prosecutor is, as well as, which Deputy Prosecutor has these dirtballs case.

Ask to fill out a "Victim Impact Statement" This will be a piece of evidence that is written by YOU as a victim and I can tell you that this will make an impact when the judge reviews the case. In a former life I worked in the County Court System. And to see a Victim Impact Statement does a lot to show the judge how it personally impacted you.. and it becomes not about "stuff" but about the emotional toll it took on you having to go through the process of losing, finding and hunting down your own stuff.

Here is a good link to assist you in writing one.. just to get your feet wet before you get the paperwork from the Prosecutors Office:
