How Many off us are E-Stewards or R-2 Certified Electronic Recyclers ????????

That can all be handled with a non compete and non disclosure agreement. Also can be dealt with a contract. Read R2 very carefully. If I am not mistaken you are required if asked to tell who your downstream partners are so that a company can track where their material is ended up anyway. All in all a company not individual yet is responsible for their ewaste untill it is properly recycled. look at all the crt porblems going on right now and the feds are looking to sue the companies that gave the crt glass to the recyclers as well as the recyclers. Ultimitly its the companies who are responsible. I dont know it all but I know one thing is for sure. i am not paying some third party my profits to self regulate me. The government does that to much as it is.

Hopefully common sense will win out (a guy can only pray and hope) with e-waste or any other scrapping efforts. If officials were "smart" (I know that's a tall task and only through political pressure at all scales of gov--that means people constantly ragging on their elected officials if needed, something most Americans don't do unless massively pushed) let the current system work as it does. For big businesses and institutions if they need to take their e-waste to a certified operation either because they want to feel better about themselves or if various govs think places of that size with that much e-waste need to be told how to get rid of it, ok I can probably live with that.

Trying to make everyone everywhere handle e-waste the same as such big businesses then I think the will back fire on the regulators (and everybody else) by more e-waste will need up in the ditches (if yards have to crack down on what the common guy can bring in). There's miles and miles of ditches along township gravel roads in my states and they all can't be patrolled for people dumping stuff if they basically can't do what they want with limited regulations. Not that I in anyway condone this, I'm only stating the obvious from what I know can happen. Us Midwesterners are generally pretty tidy people but if gov pushes people hard enough they may get unintended consequences from what the ultimate goal is of a cleaner environment. Most Americans will put up with a lot but sooner or later a good percentage aren't sheep and will rebel with such burdensome conditions, either by pushing back by getting politically active or by their "feet" and going illegal. The EPA is not a government of its own (at least not yet). Sooner or later the general public if enough are mad enough will fight back (either by putting into place an administration that has less regulations or by taking them to court). As the old adage says, "the enemy has a vote in how a war plays out." I think the same can be said of the American people who still have some say on how their lives are lived (at least that's my hope).

So, if the current sort of two-tier system works, leave it alone and let it work. If the screws get tightened then use your voice, vote, and maybe your money to fight back. Otherwise the ditches will get littered more than they may already be...

Actually wrote up a bunch in word in response and lost it all... was getting pushed out the door by the wife!

R2 is more 20,000 a year. You have direct and indirect costs. General ferrous/non ferrous are a stable market, e scrap may be the fastest growing segment but it is the most risky/volatile.

Perhaps it is the equivalent of an excavator and allows you to "get to the next level" but the next level is going to have much greater risk and take up more cash. I've been R2 certified for over 2 years, now in process for the "upgrade" to the 2013 standard (being forced to).

THAT statement right there tells me not a chance in HADES will I get the cert EVEN when I get to Ewasted's level....it would pretty much have to be FORCED on my a la court or something similar...$20K/yr for something that basically tells people I "watch where the stuff goes and handle it correctly"...yeah...I can do that with a contract I can give them and insurance/bond thank you very much.....and not for $20K LOL

Sorry Mario...had to use yours as en example....and I feel for you my man...really I do....I HOPE that the upside is 10x that amount at a min for dealing with it...that would be the only way I would.....

Well you guys at E-wasted are the big dogs in e-scrap according to some people in the know, and from what you are saying you are being forced to your words upgrade to the 2013 standard, so putting the money's associated with the R-2 certifications aside let me ask you could you get to the level you are at and maintain the business expansion you are experiencing if you were not R-2 certified?

I know many large electronics recyclers that are NOT certified. Getting certified doesn't guarantee a thing. You are pegged against other R2 recyclers not only regionally but nationally. This also doesn't guarantee that everyone is playing by the rules.

What I am saying is, any customer who KNOWS about R2, means you are bidding against other R2 downstreams. Where as those who don't know/don't care, generally just want a solution to their problem and won't nickel and dime you.

But you must send " ALL" your ewaste to a R2 certified recycler.. That means no reselling on Ebay, No selling to ANYONE that isn't R2 certified. ALL DOWNSTREAM MUST BE R2 CERTIFIED.

I agree. but you only have to do it for that customer who requests it. i am not R2 and dont plan to be.

You are incorrect about no selling on ebay. Items that are refurbished or resold are not considered waste and can be sold to anyone you want. Anything that is just plain metal with no boards in it does not have to go to another R2 facility.
