    New Idea

So I have been slow with scrapping lately since I really have no way of driving around to get it because I am not 16 yet so I was brainstorming ideas on how to make some extra cash to get the $ I need for my trailer and here it is....

    Candle Making!

People spend crazy amounts of $ Like $30 per candle at a place like yankee candle and its really not hard to make candles. I did my research on how to double boil the wax, scent it properly, put the right size wicks in, the right amount of color and its a go! I just ordered 18 jars and 10 pounds of wax, purple, orange, black colors for my first haloween candles. I will post pics when I make them but they will be pumpkin pie scented and 3 different color layered, I hope the turn out well. I can sell them for $10/ piece and if I keep making tons by haloween I know enough people that will buy them to where I can sell about 50 of them. Ill post some pics when I get the supplies.

Big candles at wal mart are 5 dollars and smell great. Stick some periods in that first sentence!

Do you already have customers or pre-orders? That would be even better.

Try everything you want to try. I am not a candle guy, you might be. Candles have made people millions. I will probably not be the one. You may be. The thing is, if you do candles, it will teach you something.

Good luck with your pumpkin candles!

I am 15 and if I go door to do or to relatives I am sure they will pick me over big box superstore walmart. And ya mech I have many people who commited to buying many, I think I have pre-orders on around 12, so that's already guaranteed my $ back, so I have nothing to lose. Walmarts candles are very bad, the wax is flakey, the wicks are not proportioned right, and you are refering to the solid colored ones, mine will be multi colored and they take a lot more time.

I bet with a sign made with poster board/ markers, table, and a few candles displayed, they will sell. People still like home made things. I'd even go to walmart and pick up some colored cellophane and ribbon to wrap them up in.

    A little of this....

    Cellophane Wrap 30"X5' Roll-Blue: Party Supplies : Walmart.com

with a ribbon tied around the top would make them look nice if someone wanted to give them as a gift.

People melt down old candles and make into new creative candles around here. They sale them at trade days and flea mkts., etc. You have to put $ upfront to display your craft, but might be worth a try. The people I see come back yr after yr., so they must be doing ok.

BTW, the people that buy old candles from me to melt & remake, said Christmas is their best selling time. Just what I've heard!

Good idea Scrapme, I was thinking Devin could melt down old candles to reuse. I find them pretty often while scrapping.

One type candle I like are the ones that are made by dipping in different colors to make a layered look, then carving on them. A black candle outside with orange inside would look cool as a jack-o-lantern, or with a cat carved in it.

I used to make candles when I was a kid, it was neat finding different molds and stuff.

Something I have not seen for years is the candles where they pour the hot wax into water so it 'freezes' as a 'splash'.
I'm not sure how exactly they did it, they had a normal candle in the centre but with the splashes rising up and out from its base.
As the candle burned it illuminated the splashes. Sorta like petals on a flower, but splashes.

Good idea, I will order some wood wicks if my current ones make me some money. And yea I burned down some old candles but it wasn't enough to make what I needsd, wax is fairly cheap anyway, the expensive part is the jars, scents, and coloring

wide mouth Mason jars make good candle containers and are pretty easy to come by, to bad your not closer I have two or three boxes of old candle glass and a huge box of wax/wicks I would give to you. In the depths of winter i will make a dozen or so for gifts or to replace the emergency candles. don't forget the little metal piece to hold the wick to the bottom or else the wick floats around and becomes off-centered.
    Good luck.

I have a good friend who's parents make crafts, candles, etc and they have the best **** candles I've ever bought. The first one they gave me was Zucchini Bread and it smelled amazing. It also lasted months, even with my girlfriend burning it almost everyday, so there is huge market for candles. I believe they charge around $20-30 per (in my opinion well worth it) and they are always having constant orders for them. Obviously it helps that they have a storefront and webpage, but if you do a good job, I'm sure you can do well and make some money. People are willing to pay for quality so make sure that's what you give them. Good luck and keep us updated. Might even get a couple people on here who are interested, myself included.

Good start!! The reason I remembered this thread is because a week ago I bought a Yankee Candle (Big Jar - Work Paid) for $27! It has now burned for 12 hours a day the last 7 days and its still over half left. My Wal Mart candles at home would be gone in just a few days of burning 12 hours. Then I remembered this thread! haha =D

    Look forward to some pics
