    stainless copper heatsink surprise

prob not new news to a lot but sure was to me today but got to the yard with almost 400lbs of mac g series flat heatsinks today. to lazy to post pic but its the ones that are rectangle mostly copper with a little bit of fins that are small about 2-3lbs of copper each and normally get $1.40lb. well go to start unloading and big boss comes out and says cant do that price but will do 0.25lb since they have stainless and of course I am like really no that's alu.
so with a little bit of fun with the torch to see if it would melt fast and nothing but to be sure another corner and nothing and with a sad look on my face, said well I will try and seperate it and be back or give up and be back either way lol maybe try and do a better price lol
so with a sad morning I learned something new today in the electronics cheap out game thanks apple for the empty wallet and scrap yard for the lesson lol

Whats the percentage of copper to stainless? .25# is crap. He is trying to pay you dirty Al price for copper and stainless.

Many heat sinks also have tin coated COPPER fins hit them with a grinder. and I also would not give this guy a second chance to try to screw you.

DO NOT TRY TO EDUCATE THIS GUY. I have been there and done that, he will just use a bigger (well you know) to try to screw you harder. just my .02

It should not matter, you should still get radiator price for these.

My main yard use to pay copper aluminum radiator price for them. They have since started paying dirty aluminum or copper bearing (top tier .12 and .15 respectively). Manager indicated he could give me sheet aluminum (.48 top tier). That still sucks and I will be looking at my other yards for get rid of these.

I have a small toaster oven I heat them up to 400 then use welding gloves to drop them on the floor and they fall apart. CAUTION: IF THEY ARE LIQUID COOLED SNIP THE TUBES OR DRILL A HOLE IN THEM. SOME ARE LIQUID COOLED BUT DO NOT HAVE TUBES!

I would get #3 Copper ($1.75/lb right now) at my yard for those if the contamination is around 10%.

If you are talking about the ones with the bottom copper and the fins on top silver colored. Hit it with a torch. or the oven Idea is a great one. the fins are just soldered on to the copper.

If it is the ones where the copper tubes go up through the fins you can use the same methods but, CAUTION, the tubes contain a liquid and it will pop and squirt you like a water gun wear face and eye protection when heating these. NOTE: not a good idea to use the wife's or moms new Toster oven for this

Last summer I was heating theses with a plumbers torch. The first 10 or so went great, the BOOM!! One blew up. It was bad enough that I had my doc check my ear drum. As stated before.....snip the tube.
